This was so good. Nina LaCour's writing has not dissapointed me thus far, I'm excited to read more of her work!

I've read We Are Okay and this is similar to that but different too. In short words, it's about the aftermath of a girl who's best friend had committed suicide. I think I might put this as my favorite book by Nina for now, I liked how the journal entries gave us insights about how Caitlin's best friend, Ingrid thinks. There were a few parts that absolutely broke me. The teacher, Mrs Delani is a great addition to the plot and when she explained why she's been acting all cold to Caitlin and told her about the pictures Ingrid had been taking of Caitlin, my tears were streaming down my face before I knew it. The ending was so wonderful, I was really satisfied with it.

If you enjoyed We Are Okay, you're most likely going to like this too! ( )

Really great story about dealing with a suicide as a teenager. How to move on with life? How to deal with guilt? This should be required reading in high schools. ( )

4.5 Stars

“The sun stopped shining for me is all. The whole story is: I am sad. I am sad all the time and the sadness is so heavy that I can't get away from it. Not ever.”

Hold Still was both heartbreaking and inspiring and it touched me in a way I can't fully explain. As someone who has and still continues to deal with depression, I found my heart aching for both Ingrid and Caitlin. This story isn't just about depression and suicide. It's about friendship and picking up the pieces after someone so dear to you is gone.

I adored the writing of the book. The journal entries made the whole story so realistic. ( )

Ingrid’s suicide immobilizes Caitlin, leaving her unsure of her place in a new life she hardly recognizes. A life without the art, the laughter, the music, and the joy that she shared with her best friend.... But Ingrid left something behind. In words and drawings, Ingrid documented a painful farewell in her journal. Journeying through Ingrid’s final days, Caitlin fights back through unspeakable loss to find renewed hope.

A deeply moving account of the pain and healing that results from a best friend's suicide. This young adult novel is beautifully written and an excellent study of the stages of grief. LaCour has a remarkable way of allowing the reader to feel the loss of a character who never existed for us, her death precedes the storyline, yet we grieve right along with the characters. This story will resonate with anyone who has experienced loss. An ALA Best Books selection and William C. Morris finalist. ( )
