Geoffrey Grey has been found guilty of the murder of his uncle but his wife's cousin Hilary believes his is innocent. When she meets the cook of the Uncle, she believes evidence of his innocence has been hidden and continues to investigate. Miss Silver doesn't really make an appearance until about half way through, but with the help of Hilary's boyfriend Henry the guilty party are brought to justice. Hoping that Miss Silver gets more involved in the next book, and that there is less repetition in the telling of the story. This book is simply a fun read. It was my first Miss Silver mystery and while I enjoyed Miss Silver, she wasn't the center of the novel. That role goes to Hilary Carew who is a passionate young woman and highly impulsive, but also brave and resourceful. She was the chief source of interest for me. The plot was melodramatic and unrealistic, but that was part of the fun! There is a definite improvement between the first Miss Silver novel and the second, but they are still not great, and Miss Silver is as absent in this book as in the first one. The story starts a year after Mr Grey has been convicted to life in prison for murder in a trial that was more than fair. The only question mark is really how he avoided the life sentence. Still, his wife's cousin is full of doubts and when she encounters one of the witnesses she starts her own investigation. The story is interesting, but compared to the masters of the genre, there is still too much coincidence, too much divine intervention, to be taken seriously. I was trying to decide between 2 or 3 stars but since I want to illustrate that this book is better, it ended up as 3. Still only an ok book. There are many that are better. Plot
A seemingly closed case is ripped open by a chance encounter on a train. Hilary, obsessing over her ex fiancé Henry hops on the wrong train and meets a woman whose knowledge of a closed case could lead to clearing the convicted man's name. This man is married to her cousin, and the conviction ruined their lives. Trying to pursue this slight chance leads to danger and excitement and of course, gives Hilary and Henry a second chance
Great read, love it. ( )
