This the fourth book by Kate DiCamillo that I’ve read and I enjoyed it as much as the others.

Peter Augustus Duchene is ten years old and lives with an old soldier, Vilna Lutz, in the city of Baltese. He was orphaned when his mother died shortly after giving birth to his sister and his father was killed in war. Lutz is Peter’s guardian.

Peter feels there is more about his life he should know — where does he belong? Is his sister still alive and if so where is she and will he ever see her again? Whenever he tries to find out from Lutz, he is told his sister is dead. That the only thing he needs to focus on is becoming a good soldier, as Lutz is teaching him by drills and a Spartan lifestyle. Peter feels otherwise.

When Peter is sent to market to buy fish and bread, he sees a tent in the middle of town with a sign advertising a gypsy fortune teller. There is a strong draw to it and he winds up spending the coin to get an answer from the fortune teller. The answer is that an elephant will have the answer.

This is the beginning of a magical tale of unusual events for Peter and some of the inhabitants of Baltese. It involves a magician, an elephant, a cold snowy night, a policeman and a woman in a wheelchair.

DiCamillo writes a magical fairy tale about trusting, hoping, the unexpected and the extraordinary. A tale for children and adults. ( )

This might have made a great picture book but it's severely lacking in depth for a longer work. The whole thing was just too simplistic. The characters didn't have to work at all to overcome their problems, things just effortlessly worked out for them. Not really worth the read, in my opinion, or the price of a hardcover. ( )

A young orphan boy named Peter lives with a fevered ex-soldier, Vilna Lutz, in an attic apartment in the city of Baltese. When Peter goes into town with a coin to spend on fish, he gives it to a fortuneteller instead, who tells him that his sister is still alive and that an elephant will bring him to her. This is nonsense - until a magician brings an elephant crashing through the roof of the opera house, crippling a woman and sending the magician to prison.

Everyone in this story has a story of their own, from the beggar to the beggar's dog to the crooked-backed stonecutter to the policeman and his wife, to the separated siblings themselves - even the elephant. And what if, what if, what was broken in the world could be fixed?

Quotes

What if? Why not? Could it be? (36)

"It is a bad thing to have love and nowhere to put it." (Leo Matienne, 84)

"...but you must know that the truth is always changing." (Beggar to Adele, 109, echoing the fortuneteller's words on p.7, "the truth is forever changing.")

"How will the world change if we do not question it?" (Leo Matienne, 143)

"'What if?' is a question that belongs to magic."
"Yes," said Leo, "to magic and also to the world in which we live every day. So: what if?'" (151)

There is as much magic in making things disappear as there is in making them appear. More, perhaps. The undoing is almost always more difficult than the doing. (185) ( )

Meh. It's a little too precious. I don't like it when dreams and self-fulfilling prophecies drive the story. Nice enough, I suppose. Liked the pictures. ( )

DiCamillo writes here in a register entirely her own, catching not the whimsical-fabulous note of earlier masters for young readers, nor the jokey-realistic one that has too often taken its place, but instead a mood of sober magic that unfolds into something that can be called, without pejorative, “sentimental,” meaning straightforward and heartfelt. The style may evoke Calvino, but the substance belongs to Christmas.
