In all his years of detecting, Nero Wolfe has never encountered an investigation as damnably messy as this one. For what began as a clean case of larceny quickly sank into a quagmire of blackmail and broken promises, international scandal and cold-blooded murder. Now Wolfe and his assistant, Archie Goodwin, must bridge eras and oceans to find the link between a Wild West lynching and a respected British peer. Only then can they save Wolfe's beautiful young client--and a hotly disputed stake of a cool million dollars.… (més)

This one got a little annoyingly jumbled toward the end, but the more of these I read, the more I'm enjoying Archie and Wolfe as characters. ( )

The third Nero Wolfe novel, and we're still in pre-war New York. An interesting fact is that the book describes a world where war seemed just around the corner, and this was several years before the start in Europe. The informed public was apparently not surprised.

Apart from being set in 1930s, it's also set in the 1890s, because the book is about a deal made in the late 19th century coming to the surface. A deal that should be honored, but there seems to be someone prepared to kill to prevent that from happening.

These books are getting better. Stout really found his footing here and this is up there with the other classic mystery novels. ( )

The Rubber Band (1936) (Nero Wolfe #3) by Rex Stout. It is important to recall that this book was written in 1936. The “War To End All Wars” was just little more than a decade over. 40 years before this book there were gold and silver rushes going on out west, laws weren’t very well written or adhered to out there, and destruction of property outweighed manslaughter as a more punishable offense.
Come 1936 and a young woman, Clara Fox, is accused of stealing $30,000 from the company she works for. The president of the company, and a man she has been seen in the company of around New York city, knows she is innocent. The man who “lost” the money while it was in his safekeeping, and who had been thwarted in his attempts to woo the delightful Miss Fox, wants to prosecute, and right now.
Miss Fox and several other interested parties come to Wolfe with the story of a pact made by a small group of men, the Rubber Band of the title, some many years before. They helped a friend escape from a murder charge by setting fire to the place he was being held and securing him a fast horse. In return, the man signed papers saying he would give a great portion of what he was going to inherit for their good turn toward him.
The guy flees, the others go their own ways and years pass. Miss Fox’s father, now a captain in the American military and fighting the Germans in WWI, manages to meet the escaped lad. Seems he is now a British general who again flees as quickly as possible. Now Miss Fox, along with a pair of the original signees of the agreement and the daughter of a third, have come to Wolfe seeking help with the situation. They don’t have the original papers that disappeared with the sixth member of the Rubber Band. But they have a limited amount of faith in him.
This is quite a puzzler. How will Wolfe and Archie get the “inheritance” owed to these people from a person who obviously has no desire to give out a penny, or even so much as a farthing. Will they find the culprit who took the 30 grand from the company and clear Miss Fox’s name?
Of course they will. But how?
An interesting read that harkens back to a Sherlock Holmes story in some matters but does in no way rely on it. The path that is followed is a winding one, truths are achingly discovered, and the so;id truth is finally revealed. A pretty good read that gets better once you get through the complicated setup. The third Nero Wolf novel, The Rubber Band by Rex Stout was a good read but not my favorite of this series so far. The story was interesting but due to circumstances not only Wolf, but Archie and even the clients were housebound for the duration of the book. While they were sequestered away in his New York townhouse, Wolf puzzled out the solution to the mystery. The mystery itself was interesting, but the atmosphere was very claustrophobic.

An old story about a rescue from a lynching and a well respected English nobleman would appear to have little in common, but this was only the beginning in this case of changed identities, old secrets and murder. As usual the superior minded Wolf was able to solve the crime without leaving his home, and Archie was there at his side to aid and challenge him and, of course, to add his own wisecracks and opinions.

I am intrigued by the intelligent, quirky Nero Wolf, but Archie is my hero and I look forward to reading about him. In this book, there wasn’t a lot of action so Archie is often delegated to the sidelines but overall, this was another fun read in this classic detective series. ( )

Read about 75% of this book and then you bring myself to finish it. I read the REX Stout series when I was younger and remembered it fondly but I guess I'm not into it anymore. Felt like an antique. ( )
