This maybe could have been a 4 star read, but it suffered from just being overextended. I mean that in the same way that a movie that was good right up until 1:30 can then loose its appeal and then even begin to grind on your nerves as it keeps going for another 40 minutes, then 60, then 80. When I learned of this book some time ago, I was intrigued by the premise of time and space gone awry, and of a group of misfits who will save reality. Despite some negative reviews, I finally purchased a copy and tried to slog my way through it. Let me be clear: I really wanted to enjoy this book. I don't expect to fully understand the metaphysics and astrophysics in a story like this, but it needs to be clear enough that my "willing suspension of disbelief" isn't taxed by gleaning nothing from chapters where there is nothing understandable to stand on. I finally and reluctantly realized I was not enjoying it, so I abandoned the book part way through. This will appeal to some; it didn't appeal to me.
It is a gauge of Bear's mastery that the book never feels like a cheat and that he manages to craft a reading experience that blends the rigors of scientific method with the more homespun pleasures of good gossip. Té un comentari al textPremisDistincions
Bear's work contains sweeping futuristic vistas populated by creatures spawned from a decaying universe. The young heroes, each assigned to protect a fragment of the universe's history, must survive long enough to pass that knowledge onto the new universe that is being born.
