Wow, it's been quite awhile since I've tackled a long book and also such a dark book.

I didn't really care for this book until closer to the end; too dark and disturbing, perhaps. Then I decided to consider it HORROR and in a good horror novel, everyone dies. So bring it on!

I did like the back and forth at first of the fairy world and modern New York; also, the flashbacks to Peter's youth. I was disappointed when it all became the present. Peter, of course, is never likable but he's charismatic and has the ability to make people follow him and die for him. Actually, no one is really likeable in this book except for the main character, Nick. Not really caring helped me stay detached and I needed detachment for this book.

I did like seeing the motives behind what people did, understanding why they were so excited about killing, what drove them and how they saw the world and their place in it. The author did well in that respect. Everyone was out for survival and all did what they did because they saw others as enemies. If only they could have worked together. . . .nah, that still wouldn't have worked, would it? I could make that into a metaphor for real life but that would be terribly obvious so I'm not going there.

Not sure I'd recommend this but I'm glad I got to the end. Again, it's a horror novel. Don't be expecting wine and roses without poison. ( )

First thing I will say is I read this as a hardcover from the library. The book is slightly unusual dimensions, being just a bit wider than a typical hardcover book. This, plus the regular illustrations (lovely!), gave it a nice, atypical Fairy Tale Book feeling.

I will also say that maybe I'm jaded by reading horrible things, but this wasn't as dark as many of the reviews led to me believe it would be. No darker than a classic fairy tale (of the red hot shoes and plucked out eyes variety), anyway. Peter himself was actually very sympathetic as the book went on to reveal more about him, to the point I'm not totally sold on Nick's perpetual skepticism of Avalon and The Lady. (I guess that's a function of Nick being slightly too old, perhaps?)

I mean, sure, it's sketchy to be recruiting dozens or hundreds of child soldiers, manipulating the vulnerable... But for a lot of them, even the crappy world as Devils was definitely an improvement. We do see Peter caring for them, at least as much as one might care for beloved pets, and more than that with the Significant Named & Developed Characters, so I wasn't totally buying Peter as a child-stealing sociopath. (Honestly, I was a bit more creeped out by the initial take on Peter in Once Upon A Time, may the muses have mercy upon my soul.)

Unlike a traditional fairy tale (values dissonance aside), there were a lot of grey characters, which was nice. You could probably extract a lesson on entitlement, selfishness, fanaticism, and desperation out of the happenings. Nick even realizes and laments two factions fighting over the exact same goal, unable to ever peacefully solve their mutual problems. ( )

Overall, pretty disappointing. I'm especially disappointed in myself for not giving up eighty percent earlier in than I did (I slogged through to the end). I'm not sure what everyone else sees in this book. The characters are caricatures and the world-building is a mash-up from Glee. [Insert your personalized whiny concluding comment]. ( )

Overall this book was entertaining, and I think Brom does a better job of re-imagining old tales than Gregory Maguire (who in my mind is starting to turn into a one-trick pony). Unfortunately, I found parts of this story to be extremely frustrating, and I think this would be true for any reader invested in the story's characters. I can't say more than that without giving away plot details, but the author pulled a few particularly annoying tricks a few times too many. ( )

I read this book for the "a book recommended by a librarian" part of my 2018 reading challenge. I found it weird, it was very violent and not at all what I expected. It was interesting having this other take on Peter Pan, but it wasn't my favorite. ( )
