Sometime last year, I was listening to BBC R 4 and they were doing a series of short readings on the theme of 'Anger'. A judge, a young boy, a lady that worked for an anti-violence initiative. And a special forces soldier named Andy McNab, reading from what sounded to me like his memoir in quite a lively way. OK, there's the internet, no problem, so I googled him. I found a 1995 abridged tape version of Immediate Action and ordered it, then transferred it to ogg format to listen to it on my portable player.

At 2.5 hours, the book is indeed heavily abridged, which does get a bit in the way of 'continuity'. Most of the chapters in the life of the author are just touched upon and then the next year/deployment/chapter starts. More like soundbites, really.

It got me interested in learning more about Andy McNabs life in the Army, which is why I'll probably try and track down the book version. McNab tells his story eloquently and keeps the listener interested. He seems to be very comfortable as a narrator, even as a non-native I was able to just sit back and listen without being subjected to mannerisms and stagey reading. Did he actually read or did he just take the script as a guideline and narrate the story freely? I couldn't tell.

I did need some time to get into the London accent, but that's good for my listening comprehension ;-). ( )
