This is a biography of Grace O'Malley, a famous Irish pirate who lived during the time of Queen Elizabeth. This is based partially on legend and conjecture, and only includes snippets of her life (mostly childhood), but it's likely to interest children. An actual biography (the beginning reads more like a story) is included at the end, and so are various pirate puzzles- including making a pirate flag by counting by twos. This is a good example of biography. It gives us the story of her life in a way that can be connected to. It focuses on her childhood. It does have some legendary aspects because we do not really know what happened with the queen of England but legends exist. The character of Grace is well developed. she is full and we know what drives her and who she is. Her character drives the story.
