Oof. I liked this a whole lot more the first time I read it several years ago. For all its delusions of grandeur and romance on a biblical scale, there's just a whole lot of nothing but unconvincing character motivations. ( ![]() This book pissed me off more than twilight if that's possible, exchange a sparkly vampire who can't be with a girl he loves for her own good with a violet angel and you've got it. Every character is painfully one dimensional, either "good" or "bad", and I waited patiently for a surprise, any surprise but there was none. The only surprise was why the hell that bimbo stuck around with someone who treats her like an imbecile. All Luce does is admire dreamy boys and notice what people wear. Ultimately my issue with this book is the message it gives impressionable hormone filled girls about relationships... 1. The one true love is out there and you can only be fulfilled with him. 2. He will treat you like crap but its to protect you from the evil world....how many stackers/ domestic violence cases start like this "I have to keep her locked up in case she gets hurt"...a real man enjoys his girl being independent 3. Women need to be protected from all the universe and the man shall do this... Daniel orders Luce around incessantly and the silly bird puts up with it, and does precisely nothing the whole book. Her only decision is hmm which dreamy but unsuitable boy shall I pick? Save yourself the bother and avoid this book, I tried to say something nice to balance the review but.....nah. Perhaps if I were ten years younger, I would have enjoyed this more. But I doubt it. Even back then I insisted on a somewhat polished plot, relatable and complex (or at least fleshed-out) characters, and themes bigger than "but does he wuv me?" I spent most of this book in a semi-perplexed state, uncertain of the point of all that prose being thrown around for so little result. Said prose isn't awful, but sadly that's the best I can say about it. It's a shame because I can see the potential for a really good story glimmering away in there, but it's just not quite realised. Spoiler: I think it's a great pity that the one person with the most actual character - Penn - ends up dead at the end. It doesn't give me much hope for the rest of the series, but I'm willing to see if number two improves any. Like many other readers, I chose to read this book because of the cover. I gave this book a star just for this. I loved the concept of this book and I thought it started off well. I found the build up to the story quite compelling and I liked the setting, especially the early scenes in the cemetery - there was a great sense of atmosphere. However, I was so disappointed with the characters. The protagonist, Luce, was so passive it was irritating. She didn't really do anything, other than being led around by the other characters and spending ages deciding which boy she liked best. That was pretty much it. I found myself shaking my head a lot at what she did. I didn't really like Daniel or Cam as characters either: Daniel was rude and offputting at the start, and seemed to switch around completely, while Cam was the opposite (although I saw this coming). I don't get why Daniel continued to pursue Luce when he knew what would happen. I also don't really understand why Daniel et al were in a reform school in the first place. The first bit of the book interested me the most, when the scene was set and we got to meet everyone - I thought the secondary characters (especially Penn and Molly) were more interesting than the main characters. Miss Sophia was a bit of a cartoon character but I quite liked her. The big reveal (who Daniel / Cam really were) did not come as a surprise (the names were a big giveaway) and at that point my enjoyment of the story went downhill and there were too many questions unanswered. The dark shadows Luce kept seeing were more interesting, but the reason for these was not revealed - I imagine this comes in later books (I may not read on though). The ending was really peculiar. To conclude I don't think it was terrible - my second star was for the concept, which was great - but the book could have given so much more . The cover is lovely. You don't find out what the cover's from until about pg. 350 (out of 400) which is a bit irritating. That said, I hated the setting, and really don't like the "mysteriously pulled to him" theme that's been in teen romance lately. Even Twilight acknowledged that it was because she liked the mystery and danger because her own life was lame.
Many elements are not resolved, such as the cause of the fire and why angels are at this school. Still, fans of supernatural romance will be lining up for this book despite its flaws, and begging for a sequel. Pertany a aquestes sèriesFallen (1)
