This book was just perfection - a sweet story with cultural details about life in India. Also, it really made me wish I invested more time into handicrafts. ( )

"I stitched the marketplace stalls heaped with turmeric and cinnamon and cumin and mustard. I embroidered vegetable stalls with purple eggplants and green melons."

My review:

This book won the National Book award. I can see why.

Koly’s story will Resonate with anyone of any age so though this may be classified as young adults or children, I would urge anybody of any age to read the book especially people who loves Historical fiction and in particular Indian fiction.

This is one of those books that I’m reluctant to talk about. You can read the description but this book is really all about the writing which is a tapestry of words and reads like one long poem. More then just vivid, the writing brings to life the Indian Culture, customs, birds and scenery in an utterly resplendent way that is rare to see. The prose glows.

Koly's journey is a fascinating one and she is easy to care about. I loved to see how her talent for embroidery was woven into the story.

It is an incredibly moving story and one that I feel Will Uplift the reader. I do love historical fiction but this book in particular made an impression on me. It is short and and it’s pretty easy to read. I think this is a definite five star read and was utterly enamoring.

And I look forward to reading more from the author.

The novel, Homeless Bird by Gloria W’helan, is about a poor Indian girl named Koly and her struggles in life. Her big family doesn’t have enough food to come around. After having a discussion with Koly’s parents, her mother and father decide for Koly to get married so they can have one mouth less to feed. They find a man named Hari, that has been sick for weeks, but since this is Koly’s only option, she agrees to stay with him. A week later, Hari dies in the middle of the night. Koly then becomes a widow. A month later, Koly’s sassur, or father in law, comes from work, he goes to sleep and dies suddenly, making Koly’s sass a widow. Koly’s sass’s younger brother sends them a letter saying that they can stay in his house in Delhi, which is quite a distance. The two women sell their house and buy tickets for a train. While waiting in the city of Vrindavan for a connecting train, sass gives Koly 50 rupees and tells her to get food. When Koly returns, her sass is gone. After sleeping by a doorstep, she meets a woman who has a widow’s house. One day, Koly meets a man and falls in love with him. As you can see, this book is because of its culture, and for a nice story of a girl that weaves through her problems and finds a solution. ( )
