This was very different from what I was expecting. At first, I was put off by the fact that it was in a modern setting, but as the story picked up, I found the concept of the sirens and their relationship to a personified ocean to be very interesting and by far the best part of the book. I loved how the ocean was jealous and motherly yet not completely human. It was remarkable.

The romance was little in the beginning, and it gave an interesting dynamic between Kahlen and the Ocean. It was so interesting. Then it when all mushy-gushy soul mates in the last 30%. I feel like it just vetoed everything I liked and all the complex dynamics at play. The ending just felt unearned. I would have loved to see what would have happened with those extra 50 years and her just moving on or something after the Ocean. That would be a much more interesting story. If it wasn't for that last bit, this would have been at least four stars.

I will, however, give credit where credit is due and say that besides be all-consuming and only meeting a few times, it seems like that had a nice relationship. It should have gotten a lot more development though if she was going to go the whole fated soulmate route. ( )

Kiera Cass has this gift of writing that she makes you want to just binge read each of her books, and so far, that is what I have done. I know there is no miss whenever I read one of her work and I am so glad that The Siren got a second chance because it would have been devastating to not have it out in the world. This painfully beautiful story is just the definition of family, sisterhood, love and following what your heart tells you. I loved every second of it! ( )

The best description for this book/series in 10 words or less:
"Imprisoned siren falls in love with boy so she rebels."

This book is basically a retelling of "The Little Mermaid," which is good but not the best fairy tale retelling I've read.

I love Greek mythology and this involves beautiful sea creatures who carry beautiful voices. The interesting part is that the sirens in this book not only have the ability to seduce men but also women to their deaths. I wasn't fond of the siren sentence since it is basically imprisonment for simply being at the wrong place at the wrong time. It does not seem so bad.

I enjoy Kahlen's character. She is very defiant but for good reason and has to learn how to fight for what she wants in life.

I really enjoyed that the setting was not in one specific place, which added a lot of diversity to the book and kept the reader on their toes.

There is a character with my name in the book, which I never see so I got really excited that I discovered it.

I loved how Aisling was the hidden rebel in all of this. She was able to try the Ocean that she left everything behind but actually managed to keep everything throughout the novel. The romance in the book seemed really cliche as Kahlen cannot live to be a siren since she has fallen for a human that she will not be able to see when her siren sentence is over.

There was a huge sisterhood sort of idea where the sirens helped each other get assimilated to each siren's new life. It's an aspect of young adult literature that is not seen very much.
