Jack London wrote that “A Thousand Deaths” was the first story for which he was paid--$40, to be exact. It is a clever science fiction melodrama that will remind you of H. G. Welles. A young man is kidnapped by his mad-scientist father, who subjects him to near-death experiments. It is noteworthy that London had a stepfather he was not fond of and a putative birth father who denied responsibility. Perhaps the story is a revenge fantasy—four stars for historical interest. ( )
