These cover the range of doctrinal, ecclesiastical and practical subjects. They are characterized by profundity, thoroughness and, consequently, authority. Andrew Thomson said that Owen makes you feel when he has reached the end of his subject, that he has also exhausted it. Although many of his works were called forth by the particular needs of his own day they all have a uniform quality of timelessness. Owen's works were republished in full in the nineteenth century. Owen is surely the Prince of the Puritans. 'To master his works', says Spurgeon, 'is to be a profound theologian.' This is possibly my favorite book in the world after the holy bible. Nowhere else have I found a more sincere, heartwrenching love for Jesus Christ with, again, the exception of the bible. John Owen's love for the Savior pours onto every page of this book. I have read it many times and I still cannot just read it straight through. This book must be read in portions, set aside, and then meditated upon thoroughly before proceeding. There is no "milk" here. There is only "meat" and it is on every page of the book. If you love Christ and wish to understand his true glory better you must read this book. Volume 1: The Glory of Christ (Puritan Paperback Series. Carlisle, PA: The Banner of Truth Trust), EEBO. 10230 Contains: Life of Owen, the Person of Christ, Glory of Christ, and two short catechisms. A Christian classic. "In THE GLORY OF CHRIST . . . we have the great Puritan pastor and theologian, John Owen, at his richest and most mature. Here he writes about Jesus Christ, the heart of the Gospel, with biblical insight and understanding that is at times almost overwhelming for a contemporary reader. "These chapters were written during the final period of Owen's life, and began simply in his personal meditation and study, before being shared with others in public ministry. Deep love for, and fervent devotion to Christ, is evident on every page. Owen had already seen the glory of Christ from afar and pondered long on its significance. Here he speaks from his proximity to eternity, and teaches us how to see Christ more clearly and to serve him more faithfully. "The publishers are convinced that THE GLORY OF CHRIST is a spiritual treasure-cave to which many readers will return again and again throughout the whole of their lives. Its sole purpose is to renew and deepen devotion to Jesus Christ." -- Publisher's Annotation The Glory of Christ, by John Owen http://www.iclnet.org/pub/resources/text/ipb-e/epl-owglory.html Owen, John.
