This was a fun and colorful book about a child describing their Abuelita or Grandmother. From the way the child speaks of their grandmother, it is very obvious that they have a very special relationship, which people of any age can relate to. I like that although the book was all in English, there were a few Spanish words scattered throughout the book. Between the illustrations and Spanish sprinkled throughout, I was able to get a sense of the character’s culture. ( )

I enjoyed reading this book because it has a good representation of a possible different culture with still having many similarities in the students lives. This book is good for young children because it talks about routines, and has 2 languages. The illustration I was not a bf fan of, i thought they were creepy and grandmas face was a little scary. ( )

My Abuelita is a cute story about the narrator’s relationship with his grandmother. What makes this book unique is the illustrations. They are vibrant and colorful, and look slightly realistic but also look animated. As it turns out, the images were made out of a variety of materials such as polymer clay, fabric, felting wool, and more. I have never seen a book with visuals like the ones in My Abuelita, so I found that interesting. I also liked how some words are typed in a different font or stand out from the other words on the page, such as “GLUB GLUB GLUB.” I thought these unique additions made the book different and fun. I thought the big idea was about supporting and loving family members, which was demonstrated through the narrator’s relationship with his grandmother. On the first page of the book, he says “She is my abuelita. I love her. And she loves me,” which sets up the story as a narrative about a boy who loves his grandmother. ( )

A young boy narrates this story about his Abuelita, and how she gets ready for her day. The routines and rituals of their mornings together - a shower and bath, respectively; a meal with starry (fried) eggs; some singing and yodeling together, along with Abuelita's cat, Frida Khalo - are lovingly described. Finally, the boy "helps" his grandmother get dressed for her job, which turns out to be working as the storyteller at the local library...

With an engaging narrative from author Tony Johnston, and eye-catching artwork from illustrator Yuyi Morales, My Abuelita is a sweet tribute, both to the loving relationship between a little boy and his grandmother, and to the important role of stories in the community. The text is sprinkled with Spanish words, all explained in the course of the story. The artwork, "created with polymer clay, wire, felting wool, acrylic paints, fabric, wood, metals, and Mexican crafts," netted Yuyi Morales a Pura Belre Honor, in the category of illustrator. Although a little sinister - I always have mixed feelings about these posed doll/figurine illustrations - the visuals here are also quite inventive. The clay figures were photographed by Tim O'Meara. All in all, a lovely book, one I would recommend to those readers looking for children's stories about grandparents and/or storytellers, as well as to those seeking picture-books with a Latino cultural background. This story is about family, imagination and power of a story. Abuelita has a very important job and its being a story teller.
