Mismatched lovers and unexpected attraction catch fire in this timeless Regency romance by the New York Times bestselling author.

Forced to wed to keep her inheritance, independent Lady Jocelyn Kendal finds an outrageous solution: she proposes marriage to Major David Lancaster, an officer dying from his Waterloo wounds. In return for making her his wife, she will provide for his governess sister. But after the bargain is struck and the marriage is made, the major makes a shocking, miraculous recovery. Though they agree to an annulment, such matters take time . . . time enough for David to realize he is irrevocably in love with his wife.

Haunted by her past, Jocelyn refuses to trust the desire David ignites in her. She never counted on a real husband, least of all one who would entice her to be a real wife. But some bargains are made to be brokenâ??and his skilled courtship is impossible to resist . . .

I expected this book to be four or five stars in the early chapters. Sadly, it hit a brick wall and went from fun fluffiness to angsty drama around the halfway point. The second half of the book took me nearly twice as long as the first because I kept putting it down.

An old favorite, read again in a new edition. The first 2/3 of the book is basically flawless, the suspense, the characters, and the plot, all excellent. The plot weakens at the end, the ending is a bit too obvious and inevitable.

Main characters
Jocelyn Kendal, only child of the Earl of Cromarty, who discovers a nasty surprise in her father's will. She must marry to keep the large fortune she has inherited.

Major David Lancaster, fatally wounded soldier in his last days, is introduced to Jocelyn and they make a devil's bargain. They will marry, Jocelyn will keep her inheritance and David's spinster sister will get a nice annuity.

But after a series of coincidences, David recovers. Now what to do with the marriage?

Two charming protagonists, good secondary characters, and the wonderful comparisons between Jocelyn's townhouse and the hospital round out the list of assets for this novel.

This book had good bones but bad flesh... Not sure if that's is a thing. I just didn't like the execution , didn't get enough from it though I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and who I filled the characters in to be...2.5 ( )

Lady Jocelyn must find a husband fast if she wants to keep her inheritance. When she meets dying David Lancaster, she thinks it's the perfect opportunity; she gets a husband for a short while and he gets an annuity for his sister. Things go wrong (or right) when David instead recovers from his wounds gotten at Waterloo.
I wasn't far into this before I realized I had read this book before (apparently, the book has been retitled). Still, I enjoyed the reread. Jocelyn is a brat at first, but David is just lovely. He's very patient with her and helps her to realize that maybe marriage isn't so bad after all. It takes a while to actually like Jocelyn as there's this subplot where she intends to have an affair with a Duke she thinks she's attracted to and I was team David. Mary Jo Putney rarely disappoints though I did think the secondary characters of David's sister Sally and his doctor Ian deserved their own book. ( )

This is an early Mary Jo Putney. It already presages her skill with characterization and complexity. Plus her prose is smooth and interesting. I read this book once before in paper and I still liked it on re-read. ( )
