===============================================

No, Tony! You can’t fuck the future. The future fucks you! It catches up with you and it fucks you if you ain’t planned for it?

There are two great things about this movie, the music of Bee Gees and the moves of John Travolta. The Gibb brothers need neither introduction nor recommendation. They are justly legendary, and for a lot more than this best-selling soundtrack (which also includes disco versions of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Mussorgsky’s Night on the Bare Mountain). Those who know Travolta only from his later years as a corpulent, not to say obese, fellow playing regular psychos would be astonished that once upon a time he was young and slim, a terrific dancer to boot, and could play charming guys like Tony Manero, working in a paint store by day, playing the local disco king by night (especially on Saturday).

The movie doesn’t have much of a plot. It is really a character study, and not a bad one either. The characters are just a bunch of horny and a little wild teenagers in 1970s New York, but they have individuality and vividness, if not much substance. Bobby and Annette almost reach tragic depths, but ultimately they remain merely pathetic. She wants to get laid with somebody, anybody, that’s as far as her dreams would go; he got laid only to have his girlfriend knocked-up, a situation utterly beyond his mental resources. The whole hullabaloo about Tony’s brother must seem very quaint today. Does anybody still make so much fuss about a defrocked priest?

Tony’s dancing romance with Stephanie is supposed to be the backbone of the movie, but it’s really the most forgettable part. One reason for this is Karen Lynn Gorney. The poor thing is not even a good dancer, let alone an actress. She can hardly play even a “snotty bitch” like Stephanie. Ironically and quite unintentionally, she makes him look better. Tony may be a vain, confused, careless and even callous kid, but at least he is not a stupid snob and an inveterate liar. He, too, is a pathetic rather than a tragic figure – quite a difference that is! – but at least he has a real chance of getting away from that sordid existence in night clubs. The sooner he dumps Stephanie, the better his chances are.

Overall, this is still an entertaining flick with fine music, great dancing, a lot of 1970s angst and a stellar leading performance by Travolta (not only on the dance floor). No doubt it was influential in making disco world famous at the time. That apart, it is nothing really that special. Lower your expectations for fuller enjoyment. ( )
