Jakýsi pomatenec, který se nechá říkat král Hara, láká lidi různých ras na opuštěný ostrov, kde z nich chce vypěstovat novou rasu, která bude mít od všech dřívějších pouze dobré vlastnosti. Na ostrově však žijí v nelidských podmínkách a navíc v kráteru sopky, která ještě zcela nevyhasla. Biggles se je pokusí osvobodit, ale nebude to věc jednoduchá. Opatření, která král Hara učinil, aby se lidé nemohli dostat z ostrova, také úspěšně brání, aby se kdokoli zvenčí dostal do jeho osady v jícnu sopky...

Dit boek is bijna een 'rip-off' van een eerder verhaal. Dit is bijna het zelfde verhaal als [b:Biggles in de vallei des doods|24012302|Biggles in de vallei des doods|W.E. Johns|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1463473241s/24012302.jpg|504075], dit keer echter op een vulkanisch eiland vol met een aantal bloeddorstige straathonden.
Ondanks dat het niet origineel was vond ik het een goed te lezen boek.

Tegenwoordig klinkt het wel ongeloofwaardig dat er 6 weken vliegtijd in zit om dat eiland te bereiken, nu we met het vliegtuig in een korte periode naar de andere kant van de wereld vliegen. ( )

Op een schijnbaar onbewoond eiland gaat Biggles aan land om te onderzoeken waarom daar regelmatig schepen verdwijnen.

Biggles sets out for Orotavoa in the South Pacific Ocean in order to investigate strange rumours about what has happened there. On board the Sunderland flying-boat are not also Algy, Ginger and Bertie but also Marcel Brissac and Sven Heldersen of the Swedish police. On the track of missing would-be colonists and a mysterious brutal pack of dogs they land on the volcanic island. There is an epic account of the expedition to the crater at the top and of the remarkable “King” Hara that they find there. The conclusion takes place amongst a dramatic earthquake and after a breath-taking downhill chase as they are pursued by the savage canines.
