I actually really liked this book. I might be biased because I have always loved the Greek mythos and the fact that this is written in a story way that includes the mythos while also making it interesting for the lower grades made me so delighted. The spin on the characters make them extremely believable, the language is written in a way everyone can understand, and the plot is very well thought out and organized. The characters are very believable, even though they are myths, because the author wrote them as middle school aged students, and the way they speak and act are in tune with middle school. One example of this when the gods and goddess are sending their heroes on missions, Medusa, the main villain, says that she gets to do what she wants to Athena's hero because Medusa's hero is the king of Athena's with an attitude. Athena responds timidly and tries to hide the fact she fell asleep while reading that part. The language also adds to the characters as while the whole myth is there, it is written in a way the does not feel like you are learning and is written in words that are easy to understand. The author chose descriptive words that influenced the story like, "Basking in her flattery," while including bits of mythology like the Horse given to the city of Troy, described as a going away present. Adults know the story of the Trojan Horse, but this is a nice way to explain it to the kids. The plot follows many different myths, as explained above about the Trojan Horse, but also includes how Medusa turns people into statues and how to stop her. The main message of this story is never be afraid to be yourself, and your friends will always support you. ( )
