I was positively gleeful to start reading another Fowl book, what with The Time Paradox being the most exciting and incredibly outstanding. Sadly I crash-landed in a not so superb next adventure. Somehow the Paradox ended on the ending note for me: good story, strong sentiments and a confession of all worldly (and underworldly) deeds. This one wasn't bad. But I found it strongly lacking. I started this series about 8 years ago and listened to the first one, which I think helped to get me hooked. I loved the new story line and poor Artemis getting The Atlantis Complex.  I suspect that the central joke worked better in synopsis than it plays out in the novel. Orion is funny but I'm not sure that he is funny enough for the trade-off – which requires filling the hole left by Artemis's absence on sick leave. True, it means that other characters, in particular the splendidly feisty Holly Short, are pushed to the fore. On the other hand, Orion is a buffoon, and while you may laugh, you may also, like Holly, feel like hitting him and fervently wish that the real Arty would hurry back.
