I really enjoyed reading this book. I think the figurative language, repetition, and illustrations all flow well together to create an enjoyable reading experience. A great book to read when teaching about the peaceful protests that occurred during this time. ( )

I was so interested in reading this book after having experienced the simulation of the sit-in at the Civil Rights Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. This biographical picture book is a well-synthesized and appropriate elementary-aged text. The opening line is written in a huge, teal-colored font: "We must...meet hate with love," Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This quote is followed with the story of four college students walking into a Woolworth's and sitting at the lunch counter on Feb. 1, 1960 in Greensboro, NC. They did so despite signs that said "Whites Only." David, Joseph, Franklin and Ezell ordered doughnuts and coffee with cream on the side. Though they sat for hours, they never received any food or drink; the waitress told them the counter and food was for whites only. More students arrived the next day to join the sit-in. In the midst of the narrative-style biography, Dr. King was quoted again. "Be loving enough to absorb evil." Despite it being difficult, the students continued to sit peacefully. They were verbally assaulted; food and drinks were thrown and dumped on them. And still they sat. The police eventually arrived and arrested them for "loafing." They were taken to jail. The story then moves to Ella Baker and her work organizing a student leadership conference and the SNCC at Shaw University. At the end of the book, the author dedicated two pages to "Civil Rights Timeline," complete with factual details and circular photos for several dates. The final page of the book includes a "recipe for integration," complete with 10 steps on a foldout page, and how President John F. Kennedy "stepped in" to urge Americans treat on another fairly. I enjoyed this book. It's a large-sized picture book. The husband-wife team of illustrator and writer have a powerful book that teaches about a dark time in our history. They've presented it in a narrative style that is engaging and inspiring.

"Sit In" is about the lunch counter sit-in demonstrations in the 1960's. It is beautifully told in prose with unique and eye catching illustrations. It features quotes throughout the book by Dr. Martin Luther King, as well as a civil rights timeline in the back of the book. This is a powerful book that could be shared with students of almost any age group and would facilitate great conversations.

With poetic, powerful prose this is the story of four young men, who followed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words of peaceful protest and dared to sit at the "whites only" Woolworth's lunch counter. From that central story, the author expands the readers awareness more broadly into the history of the Civil Rights Movement.
