The terrain covers everything from linguistics, phenomenology, theological implications, and grammar analysis. Loved it! Though it does not come out on one side or another, it gives a great picture of the debate and helps the reader arrive at their own conclusion. My personal highlight of the book was the introduction of a third view beyond object genitive and subject genitive. They dont really have a name for the third view but two essays explore the structure as an event and origin of faith as opposed to the common two. Among the proponents of this third view is Karl Barth. Its not an easy read and takes time and patience but well worth the effort. Enjoy! ( )
For these reasons, this book is unlikely to persuade a hardened advocate of either the objective or subjective interpretation to change sides. However, for those who are still wrestling through the issue, several of the exegetical and theological essays might lead to new insights and perhaps even some measure of clarity on this di0cult issue. The only problem is, such a result might lead to a whole new generation of scholars who will debate the construction.
The Faith of Jesus Christ represents an attempt to grapple with one of the most perplexing problems in Pauline studies, namely that of the phrase pistis christou. Issues of considerable theological import hinge on how we interpret it (does it mean ""faith in Christ"" or ""the faithfulness of Christ""?). The topic is now well rehearsed in contemporary scholarship and this volume sheds new light on the question by presenting rigorous exegetical studies from both sides of the debate. It also brings creative new proposals to bear on the problem, and orients the discussion in the wider spectrum of historical, biblical, and systematic theology. The Faith of Jesus Christ represents the most penetrating and comprehensive attempt to date to grapple with the significance of Jesus' faithfulness and obedience for Christian salvation and the extent to which it is represented in key biblical texts.
