By, Neil Gaiman

Format: Audiobook

Narrated By, Neil Gaiman & Cast

How Obtained: Free from Audible

This audiobook is a great adaptation from the novel/graphic novel of the same name.

I got this book purely because it was free and because it was written by Neil Gaiman, who is definitely in my top authors ever since I first came across Coraline.

This book pulls you in from the start into a dark and gritty universe that you would expect from DC comics and with Neil Gaiman’s style. The characters really drive the story and make you incredibly intrigued with what madness will happen next. The story itself is incredibly well thought out and very intense at times.

The narration of this book and the multiple cast members is just fantastic. The different voices and personalities that get brought into the story really help to keep driving you through and help you to imagine all of the different characters and how you view them in your mind.

After getting through the audiobook I definitely plan to get to the second audiobook in the near future. I have also decided to put the graphic novels on my TBR list as well.

In My Opinion, this is a wonderfully done audiobook and for free you definitely cannot beat it. I give this 5 stars out of 5.

Until next time,

Closer to 3.5. Conceptually interesting, fascinating universe, good writing, just can't get into the art style. ( )

Every legend or classic has to start somewhere, doesn't it? I've been aware of The Sandman series since the beginning, but I was very much a Marvel snob back then, and it took some serious effort to get me to read outside of that company.

I have, in the fullness of time, realized that cut me off from a lot of great writing and art and have tentatively dipped my toe back into the non-Marvel flavoured waters. I'm still not a fan of much of DC's output, but I had to check out The Sandman. I mean...come on! Gaiman? Kieth? Hell yes.

But this first volume, while at least setting things in motion and setting the tone, quite frankly, didn't do a hell of a lot for me. The writing wasn't bad, and definitely improved as Gaiman found his voice toward the latter stories. He admits himself in the afterword that he was still learning the craft of a monthly comic, and I think it shows. There's not a lot of groundbreaking here. Some, and I'm sure it was for its time, but it's relatively tame by today's standards. To me, it wasn't much different from an average Dr. Strange story, perhaps with less violence and more literary ambitions.

But then there's the art, and here's where I truly felt let down. It all came across as a bargain-basement Berni Wrightson, an artist to be worshipped, for sure, but if you're going to ape him, at least learn the basic physiology of a human being. Characters drawn head-to-toe frequently had legs far too short for their accompanying torsos. Faces would become elongated for no good reason from panel to panel.

The strength and duty of the art in a book like this is to counter the fantastical set pieces--Hell, the dream world, etc., with a very grounded reality. I'm not saying reality has to be absolutely realistic--it doesn't--but it needs a uniformity that I just didn't see here. I kept thinking, throughout the reading of this first collection, that if Dave McKean had taken the internal art chores, this would have been a much more enjoyable reading experience, and this review would have been vastly different.

Still, a legend has to start somewhere, right? ( )

Finally got around to reading this and loved it. The metaphysical aspects are handled expertly and the hell scene is awesome. ( )

Sandman is often considered one of the best of the best when it comes to graphic novels and... for good reason. It's very very good. It's got immortal 'anthropomorphic personifications' (Dream is the main character, but we also get a bit of Death), a crazy deep/complicate mythos, dark and creepy imagery, and a wacky awesome storyline. Pretty much right up my alley. There's little I could do better than the blurb on Goodreads:

In PRELUDES & NOCTURNES, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead. After his 70 year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. On his arduous journey, Morpheus encounters Lucifer, John Constantine, and an all-powerful madman.

It's... about as crazy and awesome as it sounds.

On bit of weirdness that I haven't seen much in other graphic novels is that this is a more 'mainline' comic, in that it's set in the same universe and can reference all manner of other characters, such as John Constantine (I need to read Hellblazer at some point), Batman, and others. It's... a bit weird and jarring to have the references, but once you get used to it, it's pretty cool.

Well worth the read and I'm curious to see Dream's journey as he continues to regain his powers.

Some pretty pictures/spoilers:

This never ends well. And... oops. You didn't even manage to get Death anyways. I doubt that would have gone well had you.

Such language.

Man Hecate is bizarre in this one. I like it.

Here's what I was really talking about with the references. I mean, Constantine doesn't feel that out of place, it's the same sort of story, but Batman... realy?

Yeah. I really need to read Hellblazer.

That's actually a really interesting point. And a way for Dream to negotiate with Demons.

I love the juxtaposition of this page. This story gets all sorts of gruesome.

A madman with the stolen power of dreams messing with reality. Perfectly creepy.

Dream's mask is ... weird. But kind of cool? Well set up for cosplay?

Oh Death. There's a reason that people think she's kind of gothchick awesome. Even if she's not in that *terribly* much so far as I understand. But how does she end up interacting with Thanos?

That... is a wonderful bit of wordplay.
