I was really disappointed in this book after reading The Maze Runner. I loved the first novel, and I had high expectations for the second, but sadly it did not live up to what I had hoped. I had wanted another action filled mystery/thrilled type novel that made me hold onto the edge of my seat and not want to stop reading, but sadly I was bored out of my mind and saw every turn coming.

While The Maze Runner was predictable, it was still action packed and a fun read. This book was even more predictable, and pathetically boring. I didn't even know why I was reading it or what the point of the book was because I was so bored out of my mind.

The plot was predictable, but it was a well thought out plot. There weren't any major errors in the book that I could find.

Overall, I was really disappointed in this novel. I will still finish the series, but I now have low expectations and I don't want to finish the series.

One out of five stars. ( )

This book has left me confused and turned around. I don't know who to trust, or who is telling the truth, or what is happening... mostly. Dashner is a very engaging writer, and I found it hard to put this down - though I found it easier to put down than the Maze Runner. I won't lie, I am not a fan of the Teresa-Brenda-Thomas love triangle(?) shit, but it's not truly prevalent enough to ruin my enjoyment of the book. I felt the middle was a little slower than the rest of the book, but not significantly so. ( )

I liked it better than the first one. ( )

I was kind of disappointed in this second installment of the Maze Runner series. The first one really built a lot of tension and interest, and for me the Scorch Trials just seemed so...disjointed and repetitive. I was more or less annoyed with Thomas the whole time because he couldn't see what I as the reader could clearly figure out quite easily and it was hard to keep reading when every chapter seemed to be a re-run of the last. I thought book one was so clever and intelligent and this one just kind of fell short for me.

Read this review and more at Notes in the Margin. ( )

Two and a half stars half-heartedly rounded up to three.

While all the variables of The Scorch Trials are different (more Mad Max than alt-[b:Lord of the Flies|7624|Lord of the Flies|William Golding|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1327869409s/7624.jpg|2766512]) it was also basically the same book as [b:The Maze Runner|6186357|The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1)|James Dashner|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1375596592s/6186357.jpg|6366642]. The Gladers suffer and die, never really sure of anything. Thomas has vague feelings and memories come back to him. The Gladers get tortured and endure, never really sure of anything. Thomas has a girl on his mind. Gladers fight and die. Confusing stuff. The Ad infinitum.

I think my biggest problem is that nothing really moved forward. The majority of the characters (and the audience) are still confused and frustrated by not getting the full picture. The characters are constantly under attack and that sure gets tedious after two books when there's very little pay-off at the end, either emotional or plot-wise.

Another problem is Thomas, our protagonist. While his emotional numbness makes sense with all he's been through - the mental trauma he's suffering is huge - it makes him a lousy narrator. It made me long for a different central character, like Minho, Newt, or even Teresa. All are more dynamic, well-rounded characters than Thomas. Which means I was disappointed by how little they featured, particularly their emotional journeys.

I want to like Brenda, but she came across as Female Love Interest Archetype #2. Thomas seemed to spend most of his time actively ignoring her or commenting on the awkward silence and that did absolutely nothing for me as a reader wanting to find out about the new character.

Finishing The Maze Runner made me hungry for more. Finishing The Scorch Trials left me unsure of whether I even want to read [b:The Death Cure|7864437|The Death Cure (Maze Runner, #3)|James Dashner|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1303997647s/7864437.jpg|11022464]. ( )
