El Mediterráneo, la luz, la isla de Elba al fondo. Pero Piombino, inundado de fábricas y hormigón, no es un lugar de vacaciones. Desde los balcones se ve el mar, los juegos de los niños que han convertido la playa en su centro de recreo. La playa también es el escenario ideal para la juventud. Entre drogadictos y rateros, los chicos sueñan con ser jefes de bandas mafiosas, y las chicas con ser estrellas de la televisión: cualquier cosa para olvidar las condiciones de trabajo en la fábrica, las madres agobiadas, los padres en paro, la delincuencia como una amenaza omnipresente.

Un romanzo un po' autobiografico, con un tocco di Pasolini e qualcosa della Morante. Da un lato l’amore delle due protagoniste, Francesca ed Anna, cresciute all’ombra delle ciminiere dell’Ilva, diventata Lucchini, nel rione Stalingrado di Livorno; dall’altro, la vita di una città che avverte la crisi dell’acciaio, gli effetti dell’inquinamento che trasforma i gatti di Piombino in animali strani. Francesca e Anna vengono declinate con la storia delle loro famiglie, storie di miserie diverse che hanno come comune denominatore l’asfittica assenza di un futuro. E così la vita delle due madri, dei due genitori, del fratello di Anna, Alessio, diventano il modo per raccontare un’Italia che esiste e che trova sempre più difficoltà a resistere. Un buon romanzo, ma i troppi premi assegnati dimostrano il momento di incertezza anche dello stato della letteratura italiana. ( )

Nei casermoni di via Stalingrado a Piombino avere quattordici anni è difficile. E se tuo padre è un buono a nulla o si spezza la schiena nelle acciaierie che danno pane e disperazione a mezza città, il massimo che puoi desiderare è una serata al pattinodromo, o avere un fratello che comandi il branco, o trovare il tuo nome scritto su una panchina. Lo sanno bene Anna e Francesca, amiche inseparabili che tra quelle case popolari si sono trovate e scelte. Poi un giorno arriva l’amore, però arriva male, le poche certezze vanno in frantumi e anche l’amicizia invincibile tra Anna e Francesca si incrina, sanguina, comincia a far male
