In the slums of the upper West Side of Manhattan, New York, a gang of Polish-American teenagers called the Jets compete with a rival gang of recently immigrated Puerto Ricans, the Sharks, to "own" the neighborhood streets. Tensions are high between the gangs but two kids, one from each rival gang, fall in love leading to tragedy. (source: TMDb)

==================================================

It will be interesting to see how Steven Spielberg’s version, to be released in the end of this year, will compare to the 1961 classic. Spielberg certainly has a tall order, but he is too smart to imitate and might produce his own masterpiece. The original screen version is far from perfect. The singing, though mostly dubbed and mostly better than Bernstein’s late recording (1984), is no match for the Original Broadway Cast (1957). The orchestration is arguably overblown and less effective than the leaner Broadway version, as the composer himself complained. The acting is somewhat uneven, with Wood, Moreno and Chakiris overshadowing the rest, and the pace is occasionally just a little too slow. And yet, the movie succeeds far better than even the best audio recording could. However great the music and the lyrics, and the musical stage has never seen better except for the Biblical collaborations of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, spectacle remains an indispensable part from the success of West Side Story. The visual side makes this movie a masterpiece, not because it is beautiful (although it is), but because it fits to perfection the music and the lyrics, their vitality, biting wit and poignancy. The sets, the costumes, the colours, the dancing: not easy to see how any of these things could be improved at all. It must be a dull person who is not amused by “America” or “Gee, Officer Krupke”, impressed by the choreographic rumbles of the Jets and the Sharks, or at least a little moved by the doomed romance of Tony and Maria (“Somewhere” is a thing of beauty, and an improvement on the original version). Spielberg has a tall order indeed. It’s not exactly Everest, but it does qualify as K2. ( )

Romeo and Juliet on the streets of New York.

A lot of it is very good, particularly when it's having fun. But I have never seen the appeal to Romeo and Juliet, and the adaptation does nothing to make those tedious characters any better. It's a love story between two people who have barely met, and who have no personality outside of their mutual obsession.
