Not as good as the first one. Preachier, and extremely slow paced. Took a while to get through, because I kept getting distracted by anything that wasn't this book. ( )

The story is told from multiple points of view and some are from the original one hundred, which made up the crew of the first colony ship. There are also some new characters too, such as Art a recent immigrant from Earth.

What is left of the original 100 are now well over a hundred years old due to the “treatment” that extends life significantly. Along the 100 and the other colonists there is great disagreement about how best to continue the terraforming and how far to go. Also, tension between Earth and Mars is escalating. Throw in the fact that the first 100 are still being hunted and the situation has become volatile.

There is a lot of great science in this book as well as excellent character development which made for some big data dumbs in places. I enjoy all this information but I get that not everyone likes a story that has the level of detail this one does.

The plot is good but it is slow in places, again, due to the amount of information the author gives the reader. There is a lot of political undertones in the story and the author has a lot of dialogue among the characters about the current and past events that has led to this point. The politics is critical to the plot so I suffered through it and it did add to the story; therefore, I can’t complain too much.

Perfect book, and series, for lovers of hard science fiction. I recommend that you start with book one. There is just too much you will miss if you skip right to book two.

Enjoyed the narration and give that 4 stars also. ( )

So ... if you really really really like this sort of sci fi then cool, it’s for you. But I’ll be honest I read it cause I read the first one and don’t like not reading the entire story.
There are parts I was really into, but just like the first one it does drag. And it’s clear it’s written by a middle aged Cis white male.
You can always tell, cause of the way people are discribed having sex and their body parts. ( )

I did keep going, but had to skip more and more. I don't demand a story-line in every book - but this one just did description - and with the sheer number of pages you would have thought he would have had space for a bit of story. If he was trying to do a Stephen Donaldson - he failed. But I still liked it. He has put a lot of effort into the science of Mars and I appreciate that. Now I am really conflicted because there is 'Blue Mars' to come - shall I venture it - or not? I really enjoyed 'Red Mars' but I don't want to wade through another one like this. ( )

Still great. It's really annoying that we get the most fantastic hard science fiction I've read and the least believable characters (not the worst but they're pretty bad). But it does what good SF should and sheds light on current human problems through an imaginative (and in this case wholly realistic) setting.

Corporations return as the evil empire but the real villain here is the Russian babushka who first sleeps her way to the top, wrecks the lives of two men who love her, eventually gets them killed, lashes out at everyone, cold-bloodedly murders the "villain" and goes on to ruin poor unsuspecting kids. Can't help but think the author was doing some personal therapy here with that character.

Hiroko still wins in the crazy department. No one really comes close.

"Even if you want no state, or a minimal state, then you still have to argue it point by point. Especially since most minimalists want to keep exactly the economic and police system that keeps them privileged. That's libertarians for you -- anarchists who want police protection from their slaves!"
