'A comfortable chair and a Mary Stewart: total heaven. I'd rather read her than most other authors.' Harriet Evans Legend has it that when the Gabriel Hounds run howling over the crumbling palace of Dar Ibrahim, high in the Adonis Valley of Lebanon, death will follow on their heels. When rich, spoilt Christie Mansel arrives at the decaying palace to look after her eccentric Aunt Harriet, she arrives to the sound of howling dogs. The palace is riddled with hidden passages and the servants are unwilling to let anyone see Harriet during the day. It seems the palace hides an extraordinary secret . . . one that somebody is willing to kill to keep. The deep blue oblong of sky above the open court was pricking already with brilliant stars. No ugly diffusion of city light spoiled the deep velvet of that sky; even hanging as it was above the glittering and crowded richness of the Damascus oasis, it spoke of the desert and the vast empty silence beyond the last palm tree.… (més)

When I want a dose of romantic suspense, Mary Stewart is my go-to author. I always enjoy her books because they have just the right amount of thrill. As a bonus, her books usually do a great job of describing the setting. One must remember that the books were written decades ago; this one, in 1967. The novels are certainly a product of their times with smoking, fast cars, powerful men, dastardly villains, and strong women who are the right partners for the powerful men.

This book is set in the Middle East and includes a Lady Hester Stanhope wannabe as the mysterious hostess. I fell in love with the countryside as Stewart described it. The villains were appropriately wicked, and the love interest was a bit of a surprise.

All in all, it was a good book as long as allowances are made for when it was written. It did move a bit slowly for my taste, hence the four-star rating. Most Mary Stewart fans will like it; if long descriptive passages aren't something you enjoy, then this book might be one you should skim. ( )

Mary Stewart is best known for her Arthurian novels, which were what initially drew me to her works. However, she was prolific in the gothic novel (read this link for a pretty good description of what that entails), and this is one of my favourites.

Christy Mansell, the daughter of a rich family, and also somewhat spoiled, is on a tour of the Middle East when she unexpectedly meets up with her cousin, Charles, and decides to go visit her eccentric great-aunt, who has set herself up in an old mansion in the manner of Lady Hester Stanhope (a few paragraphs about her here). But something is not quite right with their great-aunt — though always reclusive and a bit odd, she refuses to see Charles, who has always been one of her favourites, and only reluctantly grants Christy a visit. She is attended by a local doctor, a young writer, and a staff of natives. When Christy decides to investigate further, she becomes more and more confused about the secrets of both her great-aunt and those surrounding her.

Though old-fashioned and a bit predictable in places, this novel will still have appeal to fans of the genre, and possibly to those looking for something a little darker than the typical historical romance. ( )

Another of Mary Stewart's books that somehow escaped me, years back.
Didn't much care for the characters, and the story could have been interesting but got buried in side plots and way too much descriptive detail.

I know, I know, that's one of the things she does best - and to great effect in The Moon-Spinners and This Rough Magic. Not this one, though. ( )

An exciting book set in the Middle East. The cousins Charles and Christy want to speak to their elderly Great-Aunt Harriet. This proves to be a lot more complicated than they expect...

The book is tense without being terrifying. It's exciting, and somewhat mysterious, and there's a low-key romance thrown in for good measure.

Very enjoyable.
