A long film, nearly three hours in all. The musical style seems old fashioned at times, yet the choreography is excellent, and the scenery gorgeous. The Russian army, eventually driving the Jews out, are shown in historical context, making this useful from a social history point of view, and overall there’s much to think about. At the end, which was almost too abrupt, I found myself wishing it could be longer.

Una realizzazione incredibile sotto ogni punto di vista, questo adattamento cinematografico del successo teatrale internazionale generosamente prodotto ed acclamato dalla critica è un inno alla vita e racconta la storia di Tevye (Topol) un povero lattaio il cui amore, orgoglio e fede lo aiutano ad affrontare l'oppressione della Russia zarista degli inizi del secolo. Candidato a otto premi Oscar (1971) tra cui miglior film e miglior regista e con canzoni classiche quali "if i were a rich man" (se fossi un uomo ricco) "matchmaker"(sensale di matrimoni) e "sunrise, sunset" (l'alba, il tramonto), "il Violinista sul tetto" è una storia universale di speranza, amore ed accettazione.
