Narrator Jack and his mother, who was kidnapped seven years earlier when she was a 19-year-old college student, celebrate his fifth birthday. They live in a tiny, 11-foot-square soundproofed cell in a converted shed in the kidnapper's yard. The sociopath, whom Jack has dubbed Old Nick, visits at night, grudgingly doling out food and supplies. But Ma, as Jack calls her, proves to be resilient and resourceful--and attempts a nail-biting escape.… (més)

    Amsa1959: The novel about Kevin is a much darker and sad story, but it it is about a special boy and his family, and it is a MUST READ novel. It is also - like Room - a novel that makes you think and reflect of our world and lives.

Re-read: Just as good the second time around. One of my favourites!

From the moment I started to realize what ROOM was about I wanted to get to the end of the story to see how Jack and his mother made it. The fact that ROOM is narrated by a 5-year-old boy makes it even more amazing and different from all the books with the same theme. I'm happy with the ending and the characters were very realistic. It almost felt like I was reading a true story! ( )

This book was so good! I can't wait to watch the movie as soon as I can find it. I was buddy reading this, though I think if I hadn't been, I probably would have read through this in just one sitting. It really is a super quick read! Also, I highly recommend listening to the audio book. This story is told from a 5 yr old boy named Jack's perspective and in the audio book there was a child telling most of the story, though there was also a female for the adult parts. Jack's mother was kidnapped and locked away in a room for many years and was subjected to rape and abuse. During that time she gave birth to Jack. Jack spends the first 5 years of his life in "Room" thinking that he and his Ma and "Old Nick" are the only real people in the world and that nothing exists outside of "Room". It is an unbelievable story! ( )

I'm going to admit, I was ready to throw in the towel on this book around page 50, but it was my daughter who told me to persevere. Finally, around a hundred pages in, the plot kicked in. After that, I did quite enjoy the book.

However there's frustration as well. I totally understand why the author chose to tell the story from a five-year-old's point of view and for the most part, it was highly effective. Toward the end, however, the story did begin to highlight the limitations of that point of view. I think, because of that, it didn't end so much as stop. I would have liked a bit more resolution, but overall, still a very effective story.

I think a lot of that effectiveness is drawn from the narrator, to be honest. It took what could have been a fairly straightforward and somewhat maudlin tale and elevated it to something more. The author obviously took pains with what to reveal and when and I also believe some of the frustration the reader feels is to allow them to connect better with the adults in the novel, who share that frustration.

Young Jack was narrated by a woman Michal Friedman RIP :( She did such a great job sounding like a 5 year old boy. I am so impressed.

A woman is kidnapped when she is 20 and locked in a soundproof shed/cage. At no time did we hear any graphic details of rape but you just know that is why he took her. And the narrator of the story, who is a 5 year old boy, counts the "squeaks" of the bed when "Old Nick" is in the shed. The man took her, and kept her. She is at the 7 year captivity mark when the story starts.

As said, the story was narrated by a 5 year old. How could such a young narrator keep my interest? I have no idea, doesn't seem possible. His mom is a great mom. She was mentally strong. She was strong enough to survive and keep this boy mentally safe, educated, entertained and unharmed by Old Nick. At one point an interviewer asks her if she ever considered begging her captor to drop him off at a safe haven location. I don't think she ever considered it and this is the first time we see her internal strength snap.

Realistic horror and an interesting read if you can accept the fact that you will be told the story by a five year old. It's wild that it worked so well.

"When it's over you look up: the world looks the same but you are somehow different and that feeling lingers for days. - Said by Audrey Niffenegger after reading this story.

"Several times since finishing the book I've wondered about the scale of my own world and what lies beyond it" "having never seen them, are the Pyramids only TV?" ( )

Room is disturbing, thrilling, and emotionally compelling. Emma Donoghue has produced a novel that is sure to stay in the minds of readers for years to come.

This is a truly memorable novel, one that can be read through myriad lenses — psychological, sociological, political. It presents an utterly unique way to talk about love, all the while giving us a fresh, expansive eye on the world in which we live.

the book’s second half is less effective than its first. Perhaps this is inevitable given the changed circumstances of the protagonists. The walls that enclosed them also intensified their drama.

Wrenching, as befits the grim subject matter, but also tender, touching and at times unexpectedly funny.
afegit per Shortride | editaKirkus Reviews (Aug 1, 2010)

Donoghue's great strength -- apart from her storytelling gift -- is her emotional intelligence. We get just enough information to feel uncomfortable -- and therefore, to question our assumptions about how family life ought to be; and to know that life will always be an unequal struggle.

My Child

Such trouble I have.

And you sleep, your heart is placid;

you dream in the joyless wood;

in the night nailed in bronze,

in the blue dark you lie still and shine.

In Room I was safe and Outside is the scary.
In the world I notice persons are nearly always stressed and have no time. Even Grandma often says that, but she and Steppa don't have jobs, so I don't know how persons with jobs do the jobs and all the living as well. In Room me and Ma had time for everything. I guess the time gets spread very thin like butter all over the world, the roads and houses and playgrounds and stores, so there's only a little smear of time on each place, then everyone has to hurry on to the next bit.
