=========================================

Hart’s War is a powerful drama set in a POW camp towards the end of WWII, somewhat reminiscent to Billy Wilder’s Stalag 17 (1953) but a good deal darker. It can be accused of being unrealistic from the beginning and becoming more so towards the end. But otherwise the script is well-written and not afraid of playing with tricky issues like courage, honour and bigotry, Hoblit’s direction never lets the tension drop too much, and the cast is really quite excellent.

Bruce Willis receives top billing, but the movie belongs to Colin Farrell as a law school student and senator’s son who’s having a very quiet and leisurely war far from the front – until a routine errand goes horribly wrong. That’s how the war for Lt Hart turns from pins and flags on the map into a harrowing and life-changing experience. He has to start practicing law right away, for one thing. He has to confront depths of depravity he has heard about, perhaps read in books, but never really believed in. It’s a tough part that requires to separate the eggs from the ham. Farrell succeeds superbly. He was largely unknown at the time, and although Hart’s War was the least successful of the three movies released with him in 2002, I entertain the fanciful notion that his performance here was at least in some way instrumental to his blockbuster career later.

The other great star here, for me, is Marcel Iures, a Romanian actor whose meagre popularity is out of proportion to his talent. He all but steals the movie as Colonel Visser, one of the most elegant and stylishly chilling Nazis I have encountered in my modest career as a cineaste. Beautiful acting! Terrence Howard turns out his usual high-quality work, here as a Tuskegee airman subjected to just about the most blatant racism one can imagine. Watch out for his speech during the trial. Cole Hauser plays the chief antagonist in this part of the plot, and since I love to hate his character every time I revisit the movie, I guess he did a very fine job indeed. Bruce Willis is also fine as a fourth-generation West Point prig, a role in which Die-Hard antics simply won’t do; Willis is too smart to try anything like that, but all the same he is overshadowed by the rest, most notably Farrell, Iures and Howard.

So, if you can accept a few convenient coincidences and rather adventurous character decisions, this is a powerful mixture of war movie and courtroom drama. Not a perfect movie by any means, and not an immortal masterpiece despite its imperfections either. But an entertaining and thought-provoking piece of work that remains underrated. ( )

Sotto Corte Marziale (Hart's War). Regia di Gregory Hoblit. Con Colin Farrell, Cole Hauser, Terrence Howard, Linus Roache, Bruce Willis.
* Fine 1944.
