Om rekening te houden met de complexiteit van de fundamentele gebeurtenis waardoor het monotheïsme werd gevestigd, gaat Mozes de Egyptenaar terug naar de kortstondige monotheïstische revolutie van de Egyptische koning Achnaton (1360-1340 v.G.T.). Assmann herleidt het monotheïsme van Mozes tot deze bron en laat vervolgens zien hoe zijn volgelingen de Egyptenaren elk aandeel in de oorsprong van hun geloof ontkenden en hen veroordeelden als polytheïstische afgodendienaars. Zo begon de cyclus waarin elke ‘tegenreligie’, door zichzelf als waarheid te profileren, alle andere als vals bestempelde. Assmann reconstrueert deze cyclus als een patroon van historisch misbruik, en volgt de permutaties ervan van oude bronnen, waaronder de Bijbel, via renaissancedebatten over de basis van religie tot aan Sigmund Freuds Mozes en Monotheïsme. Assmann, een van de grote egyptologen van onze tijd en een uitzonderlijk wetenschapper op het gebied van geschiedenis en literatuur, is op unieke wijze toegerust voor deze onderneming: een voorbeeldige casestudy van de wisselvalligheden van het historische geheugen, die ook een overtuigende les is in de vloeibaarheid van culturele identiteit en overtuigingen.… (més)
