Girolamo Bargagli (1537–1586)

Standard Renaissance work, with mistaken identity, star-crossed lovers, and a woman locked away from all men who manages to get the man her guardian doesn't want her to have in spite of it all. You feel like you've read it before, though it is not exactly the same play as others. The addition of the female pilgrim works, but isn't developed as well as it could be. Still, that would be applying 20th century standards to a work that is best understood within the time it was written. As many of these plays, it can be read as a statement against the treatment of women and the rigidity of the class structure, or it can be read as a morality play, depending on what you bring to it.
