This is a very good introduction to British Columbia's history especially because of the great photos. I enjoyed the first two-thirds, but there was too much post-WWII and business-related stuff for me.

Jean Barman's The West Beyond the West is a good and readable introduction to British Columbia's history. It covers all the main bases, from economic to social to labour history; the only deficient area is poltical history.

The book's main thrust is just how disconnected from the province is from the rest of the nation-state is it a part of. British Columbia became a province of Canada so that it wouldn't become a part of the United States, for example. More recently, as the controversy over the lack of French at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics shows, British Columbia is probably the province where the "French fact" of Canada is weakest. Calling British Columbia "Canada's Pacific Province" seems to be a misnomer; "the Pacific's Canadian Province" seems like a more apt phrase.… (més)
