Gravity Wells: Speculative Fiction Stories de James Alan Gardner
Decent, but highly variable. Some of the stories were excellent. All too many, though, seemed like they were trying too hard to be clever or different. (If you like truly creative stories, maybe you will like them. But personally, I prefer to just be entertained by a good story, and don't care so much about whether they are clever from a literary perspective or creative and unique.) Overall, not as strong as his excellent League of Worlds series.
Each successive novel in Gardner's "Expendable" series is better than the one before and this is no exception. Great political world-building with believable aliens (prognosticating glow-in-the-dark moss?!) and a self-deprecating sense of humour which has you rooting for the good guys right from page one. But who, exactly, ARE the good guys is something the author keeps close to his chest with a Machiavellian plot whose double-, triple-, and quadruple-crosses eventually lead to a spectacular ending that plays in your head like a Hollywood blockbuster. Pleasant writing style. I found the story to be a bit farfetched at times, but it did have physically flawed people as main characters, and good female representation.
I loved this book. I don't know whether it's the quirky story, the fact that it's set in Waterloo, of all places, the characters, or some mix of it all, but it's a really fun ride.
