This book is kind of all over the place. It starts off as an English comedy of manners as a bankrupt lord sails back from America in an unsuccessful attempt to marry in to money. Then is kind of descends in to a love-ish triangle. There is a bit of compassion for the poor thrown in, pointing out the vacuity of the moneyed class. Then back to America and the scheming of people trying to make a bit more money in a kind of zero-sum fashion. So in other words, a fairly accurate take on modern life from a book that just happens to be 120 years old.… (més)
