Read first story. Cute

Second story. Really did not like one bit.

Third story. Liked even less. DNF

Picked this up from library after seeing it was a movie on Netflix. Turns out the movie is like they waved the book around somewhere nearby by an entirely different screenplay was written. I did not like the movie either.

Started off rather trite, I didn't initially think the two protagonists had enough in common to really hit it off. But they grew on me, and the ending was rather poignant.

The audiobook is really good! My 7yo and I have been listening to this together. Coincidentally, I just finished [b:The House in the Cerulean Sea|45047384|The House in the Cerulean Sea|T.J. Klune|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1569514209l/45047384._SY75_.jpg|62945242] so I saw a lot of similarities (to it and the OG mutant story X-Men). My daughter now thinks "wonky" is a slur, which is weird, but hey at least she gets what the book is trying to say.

This was a really cute story...albeit very dark and not a happy ending. I didn't realize who the main characters were for some reason until the last panel or two.

Re-read this as soon as it got cold. YA about the holidays is about all my work frazzled brain can handle right now. As comforting as chicken soup.

Let it Snow is a collection of three short, loosely connected holiday romances written by three different authors: John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle. In Maureen Johnson’s The Jubilee Express, Jubilee is sent on a train to her grandparents’ house after her parents are arrested for getting in a brawl while Christmas shopping. The train breaks down in a small town next to a Waffle House, leaving Jubilee stranded.

In John Green’s A Cheertastic Miracle, a group of friends is at home watching James Bond movies when another friend working at the Waffle House calls to tell them that a train full of cheerleaders has just arrived and they need to get down there asap. The cheerleaders want to play Twister!

In Lauren Myracle’s The Patron Saint of Pigs, Addie must admit and overcome her self-centeredness to help out her friends with their teacup pig.

It’s so hard to review short story collections because the quality of the stories can vary so much. And since in Let it Snow, they are all written by different people, each story has a distinct style. Of course, John Green’s story was my favorite. No surprise there – we all know that I’m a huge John Green fangirl. A Cheertastic Miracle is John Green through and through. If I had read the stories without knowing who wrote each one, I could have picked his out a mile away. The friend group in his story has that snappy dialogue that his characters often have, and the Duke and Tobin reminded me vaguely of Alaska and Miles.

The other two stories were entertaining as well but it was Green’s that made the collection. If you’re looking for a fun YA holiday read, put Let It Snow on your list.½

Mostly this is YA because the characters are YA aged, it's the story of domestic abuse, serial domestic abuse and a girl who finds a way out via crime and what homeless kids (and some who have to live with abusive parents) have to deal with because they can't access personal hygiene solutions. It also deals with Bruce Wayne's early relationship with Selina Kyle. It's complex and interesting and I found the characters quite relatable. I would read more in this vein to see Selina progress.

It’s unnecessarily long, as all three stories drag so much.

By and large the art isn’t good. It’s not the ugliest graphic novel I’ve ever read, and there are plenty of decent panels, but overall i don’t like the wonky style or faces - particularly the eyes and the stepfather.

The story is.... fine. A bit boring, by and large. I appreciate how Selina’s plan of being homeless fails because she’s not good at it and wasn’t ready for it because, despite how bad her upbringing was, she just wasn’t prepared. She came from a middle class US family and went to the streets. It’s... I mean I feel like Bruce should have suggested calling the police or social services or something. Selina’s got her pride, but Bruce in this story is not as smart as he purportedly is depicted as toddler.

It’s not the worst catwoman story by any stretch of the imagination. I’m just not sure what this adds to anything, other than still being drawn better than a large portion of them given how much and how badly she’s been drawn over the years. Pretty much every terrible famous male comic artist has gotten to draw her - usually for money - so this... is better than most other options.

If you’d like a YA catwoman story, though, I’d suggest reading “Catwoman: Soulstealer”, the novel. It’s a lot better.

I bought this book WAY back in 2012 when it came out. WAY back meaning I can't believe it sat on my shelf for this long with me staring at it and debating whether I should read it or not. I finally decided to pick it up for two main reasons:

A) It's almost Christmas time and I wanted some holiday cheer.

B) Apparently there's a movie adaption? And, I kinda want to see it. It's important to read the books first so I can thoroughly ruin the movie for myself and anyone I attend it with.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book: I have read most of John Green's novels so I knew what I was in for with his reading but I had never read anything by Maureen Johnson or Lauren Myracle. And, let me say, I will definitely be reading more by Maureen Johnson in the future. Her story was the absolute best in this little trio of stories. John Green's was okay (it was definitely not TFIOS, but who was expecting it to be?) and Lauren Myracle's was a little weaker than Ringo Blue's (clap and a half for those who understand the reference).

Maureen's was a beautifully crafted little love story that made my heart warm and grow like the Grinch's. John's story was a continuation that felt like the weaker sequel and Lauren's felt like a middle grade addition to a YA series. All of the stories were beautifully written, but Maureen's was for my type of reader. My friend was absolutely obsessed with Lauren's, so it's definitely a personal choice on which story you'll like more. It's another one of those anthologies you come for one author and you discover another.

The Jubilee Express is Mauren's lovely addition. Jubilee (who some people call Julie, but Jubilee is way cooler and yes it's a type of party) gets stuck on a train when her parents are arrested for fighting over a Christmas village (is Jubilee my own child? This sounds like something I am going to do in my adult future, just saying). She meets a man on the train who she befriends (who will later be featured in story #3) and then finds her way through the city. She meets a boy (because it's a romance novel, so obviously she's gotta have a love interest) and they fall into a pond and almost freeze to death (drama alert!). She stays at the boy's home (said boy's name is Stuart, why am I still calling him the boy?) and meets his Mother and little sister. The boy (I've committed, no turning back now) has an ex and it ended badly, all the while Jubilee has an dumb-face boyfriend who deserves a good dumping. The two then kiss and it's romantic and ooey gooey. It's a YA romance gallore!

A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle by Paul Orange (again, I've committed to this pun so it's time to rock and roll) continues the previous story with different characters. 3 previously unknown characters are watching James Bond movies. Introduce our two key characters: Tobin and Angie (also known as The Duke). Turns out these two kinda have crushes on each other, and as the three characters try to make it to a breakfast joint to meet cheerleaders, they realize this. It was cute, but not as addicting as the first novel. It was almost... predictable. I wasn't entirely sure where Maureen's was headed, but John's story screamed FRIENDZONE ALERT all over the place.

The Patron Saint of Pigs by Lauren Myracle is what took me the longest to get through. In one day I flew through the first two stories, but then along came this story. Another continuation, but... different. It had a different tone than the previous two. I did not enjoy the lead character, I did love the pig and I felt bad for Jeb because he deserves someone who's more considerate than his current girl, Addie. Like... dude, you almost lost your friend's pig. That's cruel. This book was packed full of the middle grade drama I don't miss from back in the day. Lauren's writing was still absolutely beautiful, but this story was not for me. I was kinda sad this book ended on this specific story because it felt like the weakest for me.

Overall, I did enjoy this book and I would love to read some more Christmas-y YA love stories. I also highly recommend Maureen now because OMG she's good.

Four out of five stars!!

This is the kind of book I would have liked back in... Grade 3? Maybe... But now? Ohmigosh nooooo.

If you can't tell, this book is aimed towards middle school pre-teens who are gossip-y and love drama. It's a great book for that soap-opera loving pre-teen who would DIE for Pretty Little Liars and that kind of book/television show.

The book feels like a journal of some kid who's just wailing about how much their life sucks and how they will literally DIE if they do not get that nail polish they asked for. Like, literally. Super literally. Not like, fake literally. These girls are whiny, superficial and feel like the popular girls who go "OHMIIIIIGOOOOOOSH." It felt whiny.

It is a book I wanted to read when it came out though, but I am now not the age group for it. I completely understand why and can appreciate that, but it's not for me. Before the haters jump in... I am allowed to go back and read a book I wanted to read but could not due to my financial situation being a teenager without money due to helping a sick parent financially. I don't have to like the book. I can read a book that wasn't aimed for me and see if I like it. Whoo, let the haters roll in....

One out of five stars.

Bliss follows a 14-year-old in 1969 who has recently moved to Atlanta from a commune in California. She has to learn the ropes of a new school and live in a wildly different culture (TW: racism) than the one she grew up in, while simultaneously dealing with hearing a ghost's voice and occult behavior of a new friend of hers.

The premise of the book was easy to follow and made for a really quick read. I quite enjoyed the creepy vibes it gave and liked learning about the different characters. For me, those creepy vibes are what strung the book together and made for a book I did not want to put down. I did, however, think that there were a lot of extra details, especially regarding the hippie commune and racist behavior in Atlanta that were glossed over but still strung through the entire novel, which at times felt out of place with the rest of the book.

If the story had been left as just a creepy ghost story, it would have been great, but the way that racism was tied into the book, combined with a complete lack of addressing it left me feeling a little icky.

The first book in this series, we are introduced right away to the main character, Nory. Nory and her family all have magic powers and Nory is preparing to take a test which will admit her to a special school. The school happens to be run by her strict and stern father. The only problem is that Nora’s magic always goes a bit upside down. Instead of just transforming into a cat, she continually transforms into a cat combined with another animal, which always results in disaster. Nory predictably fails the test and is not accepted into the school. Her family ships her off to live with her aunt where she has to learn a new school, new routine, and try to get her magic under control. Along the way, she makes new friends and learns unexpected lessons. This book is entertaining, moves quickly, and hooks readers right away. Nory is an endearing character and this series introduction was enjoyable and made me want to continue reading future books from the series!

4.5 Stars... Very cute!!

The Winsome Threesome are back and heading to college!! Zoe, Maddie, and Angela are scattered throughout the country, but that's not going to stop them from being there for each other... or experiencing all that college has to offer. Maddie comes up with a grand "yolo" plan for the girls that has them saying YES to all opportunities that come their way. The only problem with that is: Zoe and Doug are having problems, Maddie's suitemates leave her out, and Angela is having issues with the sorority she's pledging. Through it all the girls are there for each other, push each other, and have each other's backs. And it's all documented in text and IM.

My Thoughts:
So I was excited to read another Internet Girls book! Especially after SO long. The first 3 books came out over 7 years ago, so I wondered what made the author want to revisit these characters? And I guess I'm still kind of wondering, but I read the book anyway. I was a little concerned that I wouldn't remember what went on in the series, but I quickly realized you don't really have to read the other 3 books (or remember much about them) to enjoy this book. I also forgot how fun it is to read books written in a non-conventional format. Tons of fun!!

This book finds the 3 best friends Maddie, Zoe, and Angela in college and separate, but still committed to keeping in touch. Maddie convinces them to make a pact... a yolo pact, where they will embrace all the adventures that come their way in college.

Maddie- She's off to school in California, ready for anything and everything. Then she meets her suitemates. Apparently the other girls in her suite were all besties in HS. They have all these inside jokes and treat Maddie like an outsider.

Zoe- She's in Ohio and Doug's only an hour away! But as Doug acclimates to college he starts pulling away from Zoe. Zoe hasn't been living up to the yolo pact, she's been obsessing over Doug and staying in her room. What's going to happen if it all falls apart?

Angela- She's pledging a sorority and loves the social life!! It's all fun and games until a freak accident and roommate troubles pop up. Soon Angela starts to realize that Greek Life might not be all what she thought. And when she meets a guy that definitely won't fit in with her new friends, she starts to wonder if this is all worth it.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This series is just pure fun and nothing else. What I mean by that is it's entertainment and it's light-hearted. It's not DEEP or depressing or life-changing. Don't get me wrong, there are issues like date-rape, sex, drinking, and such covered, but it's not anything huge. This is more about friendship and happiness. It's a light in all the darkness that some YA contemporary can be,

At times I did get confused as to what technology these girls were using. I didn't feel like it was clearly addressed, but it seemed like IMing because they had screen names. The thing is I don't think that people actually use IM anymore? I feel like this would have been better if the author clearly stated that they were using Facebook Messenger or text instead.

PS- Total cliffhanger ending!! Are there going to be more books????

OVERALL: I loved reading about these super fun, awesome girls! This book was a ray of sunshine and happiness for me. I loved revisiting the relationships the 3 have with each other, and I soon realized that you don't need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. I would recommend this to younger YA-ers, or just anyone who is looking for a break from all the DEEP stuff.

Roadtrip book!! Jesse and her BFF Vicks haven't been clicking lately, so she decides to take her on a roadtrip to fix the distance. Only Jesse wasn't counting on Mel, the new girl, tagging along.
We have:
Jesse- super religious, very opinionated, lives in a trailer with her mom. She just found out her mother has breast cancer and doesn't want to deal with it.
Vicks- Wild-child only sister of 4 brothers. Missing her boyfriend who just started college at "The U" and wonders why he hasn't called or texted since he got there.
Mel- Shy, awkward, unsure of herself. Never had girlfriends she could trust, feels like an outsider.
These 3 who all work at The Waffle House in Niceville, Florida, embark on a roadtrip to Miami with stops to see funny landmarks, meet boys, go to parties, fight, and figure out friendship along the way.

I just want to say I love these 3 authors independently, so when I saw they wrote a book together I was excited! It didn't quite live up to the awesomeness that their other books are, but it was still enjoyable. I really hated Jesse through most of the book, but then again I am not religious and Jesse kind of embodies every reason that I don't like to be around religious people. Too judgemental!! But even though I didn't agree with the things she said and felt, I still found myself wanting her to mend things with Vicks.

Mel was almost too much of a sweetheart. How can someone who has everything be so oblivious to it? I really hated how Vicks and Jesse used her for her money for the first half of the book, but I think by the end the bond they formed with her overcame that stuff.
