Marie Vandenbeusch

Coffee-table exhibit catalog of a 2016 show at the Cleveland Museum of Art with objects from the museum’s collection and on loan from the British Museum. None of the artifacts are especially spectacular; there are no golden masks or monumental statues. However, more mundane objects – a paint box, a hair ring, wall relief sections and fragments of papyrus scrolls – are reminders that the ancient Egyptians were ordinary people. The accompanying text, by Egyptologists from the British Museum (Marie Vandenbeusch), the Louvre (Aude Semat), and the National Museum of Scotland (Margaret Maitland) seems like it might be overly technical for the intended audience, but I found it interesting enough, especially Semat’s discussion of the image in Egyptian religion.… (més)
