Being an rather donnish analysis of the major league baseball of the 1890's, when the twelve-team National League was the only league. The first third of the book consists of capsules of the season's play, whilst the remainder contains analysis of various topics such as player metrics, press coverage, ownership, and fan culture. The aficionado can learn a great deal from this book; however, it contains a substantial number of typographic errors and this non-expert caught one howler of a factual error (Ed Swartwood never played big-league ball? Tell them that in Pittsburgh...) Between that and the somewhat stodgy prose, fans of the period, who can't get enough of it, will enjoy this, general readers probably not so much.… (més)
