A rain storm in summer. Krommes' illustrations are vibrant as always. The text features a lot of rhyming, alliteration, and onomatopoeias to evoke the experience of a summer rain storm rather than a narrative.

Book for primary. This story is about a boy who is walking outside and tells us a little bit about all the animals he sees along his walk. Great book for when were learning about different animals and where they may live. There may be better books now, but this was a sweet story.

Gorgeously illustrated and beautifully written. The text is one long poem to accompany the pictures, describing different things a trio of siblings encounters on their walk through nature in the dark.

The darkness of night unfolds into the scene of a small adventure and invites as a bedtime read.

When the family dog wanders off in the evening and the three children can't find him anywhere, they grab a flashlight and head out to find him. But the puppy isn't the only thing they discover as nature settles into nighttime.

This book is written with lovely, poetic form, which flows smoothly and invites to lean back and enjoy the verbal scenes. Each phrase only holds a few words, and the author has made sure to keep the vocabulary very age appropriate. It's beautifully woven (as in adults will enjoy the poetry) without alienating young listeners.

The illustrations are cleverly done. Not only are these also well-done from the plain, artistic stand-point (and beautiful), but they take care to show that nighttime doesn't mean black and white. Instead, shades and colors fitting to the scenes create a natural and inviting atmosphere. This makes nighttime more inviting and awakens curiosity. There are animals and surprises hidden here and there as the single beam from the flashlight lightens up areas here and there. I would have wished there was more going on as some moments rang a little monotone, but this does invite to calming down and heading into those sleepy hours.

This is a lovely bedtime read, which relaxes, calms fears of the dark, and might have young listeners wanting to head out on their own nighttime adventure soon. I received a complimentary copy and found this to be a lovely, bedtime read.

A picture book in which the rhyming text takes the form of a mama bear trying to convince her cub that it's time to hibernate for winter. The cub doesn't want to go to sleep and points out all the other animals that seem to still be up and about. The mother explains how they are all settling in for winter, too, and the illustrations (which are what I would call realism-tinged cartoonish) show all the various burrow, nests, and hidey-holes of the various animals. The text is fine, but the illustrations are just lovely. This will be heading off to my youngest niece for Christmas.

Summary: This book is about how a wall can have extremely different meanings. It shows how the walls can be very important. Reflection: I enjoyed this story and how well it was put together. I liked the illustrations and the way it showed how walls can divide us.

An interesting book taking the walls as metaphors, seeing different walls and how children behave when there is a wall around them. There may be walls for us to work together, other walls make people mean and other walls that become castles and make children play together or just shout MINE!. While reading this book I found many meanings for the walls, it will be interesting to see how students every time they read this book could find a different meaning of building a walls and know how to work together to build a great wall can be a challenge because they need to work in a collaborative way with others. Students can learn the different ways to work with others and the ways they can be kind. Also, I think that they can learn that walls can hurt other peoples feelings when one created their own invisible walls, by rejecting others and being selfish.

A young girl and her family experience the thrills of a summer thunderstorm at their seaside farm. Concise rhyming verse and detailed watercolor illustrations capture the energy of the storm and the warmth of family.

American author Dianne White joins forces with Australian/Italian illustrator Felicita Sala in this lovely picture-book examination of colors, the seasons, and the life of a family where a new baby is expected. As the poetic text describes the colors of each of the four seasons, the artwork expands upon the story, depicting a young boy and his family and friends throughout the year. It soon becomes apparent that the boy's mother is pregnant, and the artwork follows this development, until the happy conclusion, in which a new member of the family is welcomed into the world...

I found Green on Green immensely appealing, from both a narrative and aesthetic perspective, and thought that with White's poetic text in rhyme and Sala's gorgeous artwork, it would make a wonderful read-aloud selection. I enjoyed the exploration of color and season in the natural world, and how this was paralleled by/paired with the entirely visual narrative about the mother's pregnancy. I also appreciated the diversity of characters here, and that this beautiful brown-skinned family is depicted as having friends of all kinds. In short: a lovely book, one I am glad to have picked up. It addresses a fairly common theme in picture-books - the arrival of a new sibling - in a unique and creative way. Recommended to picture-book readers looking for stories about the seasons, about colors, and most of all, about new arrivals in the family circle.

This is a very positive short book for kids having trouble saying goodbye. The books talks about leaving family, leaving for school, and also doing things that make you scared but have positive outcomes. Ages 3-5 Pierce County Library

This book is about change and growing up. I think that this book would appeal to younger children. I enjoyed the way it used a variety of different children to portray the things that most children face when getting older like jumping in the pool for the first time or outgrowing old clothes. This book is diverse and universal at the same time.

I was worried that this would be another Steve Jenkins-like title (nothing against him, it's just that he's very prolific and all the books start to run into each other after a while) but it turned out to be something quite new and outstanding (no, it's not by Steve Jenkins, but Page illustrates/works with him a lot, so that's what I immediately thought when I saw the cover).

So. Simple rhymes introduce different animals and the colors of the food they eat. Starting with the title, "Who eats orange? Bunnies in their hutches do./Chickens in the hen house too." shows a grey rabbit munching a carrot and vibrant red chickens pecking at cantaloupe melons (they do like these - I've fed them the rinds). The story continues with a goat eating an orange, a pig eating a pumpkin, and gorillas... "No! Gorillas don't eat orange. They eat..." turn the page to discover what gorillas, giraffes, zebras, and hippos eat! As you continue you'll note that the animals are loosely divided into sections - domestic animals, African animals, ocean creatures, wild animals of North America, tropical creatures, and so on. The book ends with a pudgy white hand in a red sweater scooping up a handful of blueberries and a rainbow of foods that people eat.

Back matter explores the habitats of each section - farm, Africa, ocean, forest, rain forest, and tundra. The vibrant digital illustrations mimic paper collages but have a smoother edge. Each animal and food is set against a white background and the simple art and text makes this ideal for toddlers.

Verdict: This is one of those excellent nonfiction titles that can be expanded for many different audiences. Read it in storytime with toddlers, helping them recognize animals and colors; read it with preschools and learn different kinds of fruit, vegetables, and other foods; study it with elementary students to discuss habitats and the similarities and differences between what animals and people eat. Highly recommended.

I thought this was a great book that teaches children the importance of goodbyes. I think this is great for children to learn how hello and goodbye are important and how goodbye brings hello. this story talks about when one door closes another one opens. This is a great book for young kindergardens to read when going to school.

This is a silly little book about different foods and trying new things. The book goes into different fruits and vegetables the characters are trying as part of their diet. I would think this is a good book for using for cooking with students or talking about trying new foods. Also I would think that this book would be good to show people eat different things and thats ok.

this is a great book for kids getting ready to start school. Though they might be scared or nervous of the changes you can use this to show them its not so scary. I love the bright colors and rhymes they use in this book it really keeps the attention. I also love the illustrations of the characters in the book. Goodbye brings hello is a great lesson for kids to know the next step in life isn't always so bad.

This book depicts the approach, duration, and resolution of a summer storm. The phenomenal and striking illustrations are rendered in scratchboard and watercolor. This book has very striking details, a simple story line, and uses basic language and rhyme in order to draw in the attention and focus of young readers. The plot spans for one day, also teaching young readers about the passage of time, from morning until night. The book ends, "Moon rises. Golden glow. Glitter stars, twinkling light. Black on gold...on silver night." Very nice lyrical writing.

This beautifully illustrated picture book portrays an ordinary stormy, rainy day in the country that looks wonderfully extraordinary. The scratchboard illustrations with added watercolor paint by 2009 Caldecott Medal winner, Beth Krommes, are the real stars here. With repetitive, spare, dreamy words and illustrations we see a day unfolding--wash being hung on the line, fields being plowed, pigs rolling in the mud, loud thunder, drips dripping, umbrellas up, rain suddenly stopping and finally the sunshine. The two-page visual spreads are breath-taking, especially the final spread of a breaching whale “on a silver night.” This is a magnificent picture book for sharing one-on-one with your preschooler or budding young artist.

beauitful illustrations showing emotions of a big storm. It has many animals and barns and the feeling is like being on a farm.

The scratchboard and color illustrations in this book are fantastic and depict beautifully the mood and subtle details the farm goes through as the seasons change. The text is also lovely, but the illustrations are what makes this book really special. This was one of my favorite finds this term.

An ocean-side farm gets a storm and all that it entails. At first it's stormy, then rainy, then sunny and muddy. All of which are being expressed in a beautiful scratchboard and watercolor artwork with minimal wording and gentle rhyming.

My daughter said she loves this book and that it is BEAUTIFUL! We have both The House In The Night and Swirl by Swirl illustrated by Beth Krommes. We love everything about Swirl by Swirl but this one is so much more interesting than The House In The Night both the illustrations and the story. Love the addition of color to the black line woodcut or scratch board style.

What a lovely illustrated book. It was calming to read the text and soak in the very beautiful images.

This is a story of rain that pours and causes all to seek shelter. And, then there is joy when the sky breaks forth and the sun shines through.
