I might have gone through my life knowing absolutely nothing of the history of Zanzibar without reading this book - and I’d be worse off for it. I love this book, and the idea of it generally, having picked it almost at random from the bookshop, as it shows that history happens everywhere at every time, in places far away you don’t often think of, and stopping to learn about it can be really fulfilling. It loses steam in the last chapter or two as it shifts to the present day, as it doesn’t have the revolutionary narrative to draw upon - it feels like an addendum to a story that has just been told.… (més)
