Joyce was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. After graduating from Millbury Memorial High School she began a twenty two year career in the U. S. Navy. Joyce unwittingly found herself in the fore-front early and often in her career, among the first group of women to be trained as an FMF (Field Marine Force) Hospital Corpsman and then among the first group of female Sailors to embark upon a US Navy ship. She enjoyed her naval service from coast to coast, five continents, and the seven seas through the post-Vietnam era into the post-Gulf War era.

Following retirement as a Chief Petty Officer, Joyce pursued a second career in health care and health care administration before receiving full Veterans Administration disability compensation as result of injuries incurred during her service.

She currently resides in Ellsworth, Maine with her husband and black lab Chief.
