Roger Ebert has died of cancer, which he'd been fighting for the past decade. I didn't always agree with him, but I thought he had very unique and meaningful things to say and write.

I mention this here because he was always a science fiction fan and even got his start writing letters to sf fanzines. He was also a booster of good science fiction and fantasy in films.

I'll miss him.

Oh how sad. I only just saw yesterday that he was cutting back on his work because the cancer had returned. I think I learned much of my love of movies from watching Siskel and Ebert; loved their interaction. I'll miss him too.

I just read a quote from him in this morning's paper, where he was putting a silver lining on his health making a turn for the worse. He said from here on out he'd only be reviewing films he wanted to review.

He wrote letters to Yandro when he was a young fen; I'm sorry to hear this news.

Ebert wrote an interesting essay in Asimov's SF magazine back in January 2005. I'm pleased to see it is available online for all to read http://www.asimovs.com/_issue_0501/thoughtexperiments.shtml

Very sad. First Paul Williams and now Ebert. This has been a very bad couple of weeks for criticism. :(

One of the few (if not only) critics who actually GOT 2001:A Space Odyssey.
