I am trying to find a short science fiction story I read in 1980-1990 or so.

An astronaut is sent to investigate a strange ship in space. I believe it was seemingly abandoned. He boards it through some sort of portal and is greeted by a man with a shaved head living in a virtual paradise, where the entire ecosystem of the ship is a sustainable garden. The man also seems to have a "harem" of stunningly attractive women one of whom the shaved head man "assigns" to the astronaut.

However, despite the idyllic nature of the ship, surprisingly, the shaved head man traps the astronaut on the ship and leaves him there, exiting through the same portal the original astronaut entered. The astronaut originally wishes to escape and attempts to several times before slowly finding he loves the peace and tranquility of life in the garden and stays.

Please note, this is NOT the movie/novelization of Silent Running despite the space garden aspect.

>!******spoiler alert *********

In a twist ending, we discover astronaut becoming the shaved head man ready to trap his past self who has been sent/discovered the ship.

The story ends with words to the effect: "You are in for a wonderful future"

Thanks.

Apart from the the space ship, the baldness, and the abandonment, this plot is virtually identical to Heinlein's short story By his bootstraps. Its final line is "There is a great future in store for you and me, my boy -- a great future!"

Thank you. I will have to read this to see if this is the one. It does sound very similar. The inconsistencies could be due to my own error in memory.

Thanks.

Confirmed. This was the story I remembered. Not sure why I was thinking it was an astronaut/spaceship.
