>2 JulieLill: I found out his morning that my library is having a party. Going to stop by this afternoon. There's a cake and punch and all late fees are forgiven if the book is turned back in today.

>3 Carol420: Hope you enjoyed your cake, Carol, 🙂.

Our local council scrapped late fees for library books a little while back. So much better.

>4 Sergeirocks: The cake was a combination of chocolate and white, shaped like a big book. They gave the kids cute bookmarks. A lot of people read in my city so there was a lot of folks. Love to see people are still reading actual books.

I heard the sad news that Anne Perry has recently died. I know several people in this group were fans of hers, and I wanted to express my condolences.

I never thought in our lifetime that we would still be dealing with people who are still banning books - so sad!

>28 JulieLill: Isn't that the truth! I remember my mother going to school and having a "discussion" with my teacher when I was in 2nd grade because she wouldn't let me bring Little Black Sambo to school. I always brought one of my books from home to read at recess and she made me put it on her desk until I went home.

>28 JulieLill: There's a short story in Bradbury's The Illustrated Man about burning books. It's told from the POV of the authors of the banned books, starting with Edgar Allen Poe standing at the top of the castle in the Emerald City and MacBeth's witches chanting incantations in the hopes of turning away the rocket ship from Earth.

Like you, I thought we were all past this but apparently not.

The Newberry Library in Chicago is having an exhibit of Pop Up Books which I think that would be a fun exhibit to attend!
