Anita (FAMeulstee) goes on where the books take her in 2023 (12)

Welcome to my twelfth (and last) thread in 2023!

I am Anita Meulstee (60), married with Frank (62) since 1984. We live in Lelystad, the Netherlands. We both love modern art, books and walking.

"Reading" by Berthe Morisot (1888)

I have been hanging around in this group a few months after finding LibraryThing in March 2008. I skipped one year (2013), when my reading dropped to almost nothing. This was a side effect of taking Paxil. In 2015 I was able to wean off Paxil, and a year later my reading skyrocketed. The last years it is slowing down sightly, my initial "reading hunger" has waned a bit.

I read (almost) everything, from childrens and YA books to more serious literature, mysteries, historical fiction, fantasy, and I try not to forget to throw some non-fiction into the mix.

Hello Dear Friend!! I haven't been on LT that often due to health issues. I very much miss visiting your thread. It is raining today, the lamps provide a soft glow and a calming effect. I'm still in and out of the hospital. But, overall, I am high funcioning.

Ok, enough of me. I see that you are reading like magic! It's been a good year of reading. Twelve threads -- You certainly had a good year of reading. I very much like the top painting "Reading" by Berthe Morisot (1888) I know she is a lesser known artist, which amazes me that many are not familiar with her beautiful paintings. Here is the painting that I saw at a local Musieum. They were having a show of Impressionists and this paiinting was on loan.

Regarding Monet, I found a lovely book by chance on Thriftbooks.com. Overall their used books are good quality. Of the many I purchase, there is only one that I sent back. The book that I very much enjoyed is Linnea in Monet's Garden by Christina Bjork

Are you and your husband still walking a lot?

I send all good wishes.

Linda

Thanks for sharing the painting by Berthe Morisot you saw, I recognise the style.
I used to own the book you mention Linnea in Monet's Garden, I have read it before I found LT. If I remember right it was a very nice introduction to Monet for (older) children.

library, e-book, Dutch, English translation Tonio: a requiem memoir, 632 pages
TIOLI Challenge #8: Read a book that fits any of the "page 2" challenges for 2023

The writer lost his only son, Tonio, a few weeks before his 22nd birthday, in an car accident in the early morning of Pentecost in 2010.
The book is a hommage to a life lost way to soon, the obsessive search of the parents what happened in the time between his last visit to his parents and the fatal accident, and the desperate sorrow of mourning for a lost child.

This book won the Libris Literatuur Prijs and the NS Publieksprijs in 2012.

TIOLI Challenge #3: Read a sequel to a book you read earlier in the year. Please name the original book

De grote eeuw book 5
Johanne, daughter of the eldest brother Lauritz, becomes part of the Norwegian resistance and the SOE. We see the same timeframe from the previous book De kop in het zand, where we followed her father through WWII, now through her eyes.
A lot about the women who worked in various positions in the resistance and the secret service. Women were used to seduce German officers to get information. After the war they were mostly forgotten and ignored.

book 260: Open zee by Catherine Poulain

TIOLI Challenge #8: Read a book that fits any of the "page 2" challenges for 2023

Lili has fled her village in France, and went to Alaska. She wants to sign on at a fishing ship. After a while she finds a captain who will take her. The work is hard, and even harder for a woman. She isn't the first woman to go out, later she even meets a former female captain, but she has to prove a bit more than her male companions.
In the second part she gets involved in a relationship with a sailor. From here her life, and the story are going downhill. I loved the first part with the adventures on the ocean, the descriptions of desperate life of alcohol and drugs users in Kodiak, and the urge to go back to the sea.

TIOLI Challenge #7: Read a book that it's easy to dip in and out of

A very unusual perspective, the canvas for the painting tells the story.
The painter Felix Vincent is known for his portraits. He gets an assignment to paint the deceased son of a very rich man. While creating the portrait his wife becomes pregnant.

A bit forced, both the plot and the perspective.
The book won the Libris Literatuur Prijs in 2005.

A deadly fog has taken over the world, and Almere is the only unaffected place. It happened on a working day, so many inhabitants were away to their job. Mainly children, women, and elderly were in the city at the time, and the men locked up in the local jail. Together they try to build up new society, without electricity, clean water and other comforts.

Renate Dorrestein was writer in residence in Almere for a year. In return she wrote this book about Almere. The city regular gives a writer a place to stay for a year, in return they write a book. A nice way to make this very young city more known.

1001 books, library, e-book, translated from French, English translation Suite Française, 537 pages
TIOLI Challenge #8: Read a book that fits any of the "page 2" challenges for 2023

The writer was born in Russia before the revolution. She ended up in France, where she became a well known writer. She started to write this book in the early days of WWII, when France was occupied. She intended to write five parts, but only wrote these two, as she was a Jew, and her life ended in Auschwitz. Her bio and some letters are at the end of this book, together with the history of the manuscript. To me that was most compelling part of the book.

The first part book itself tells the story people fleeing from Paris, when the German army comes near. In critical times like this the best and the worst come up.
In the second part it is 1941, in a small village most people are adjusting to the German occupation. Many collaborate, only very few resist.

book 271: Kramp by Gao Xingjian
library, translated from Chinese, Nobel Prize, English translation Buying a Fishing Rod for My Grandfather, 127 pages
TIOLI Challenge #7: Read a book that it's easy to dip in and out of

Reading these six stories was an odd experience. The first two stories, 'Cramp' and 'The accident' are just plain observations of what is happening. In 'Cramp' a swimmer gets cram while swimming in the sea, he is far from the shore, and wonders if he will make it. In the 'The accident' a man on a bike is hit by a bus. A little more personal is 'The Temple' where a couple on honeymoon walk to the remains of an old temple. In 'In the Park' two people meet again after a long time. They liked eachother back then, but they married someone else. In 'Buying a Fishing Rod for My Grandfather' a man thinks back to his youth. He buys a fishing rod for his grandfather, and goes to the place where he grew up. The place has changed a lot, and he is unable to find any familiar plare, nor his family. 'In an Instant' is very strange, short paragaphs meander through multiple different stories.

In some stories there is a brief mentioning of the difficult times of Cultural Revolution.
In the Dutch edition each story is translated by a diffent translator, and an afterword that describes Gao Xingjian's life, and a summary of his Nobel Prize acceptance speach.

book 272: De pianiste by Elfriede Jelinek
1001 books, own, translated from German, Nobel Prize, English translation The Piano Teacher, 296 pages
TIOLI Challenge #9: Read a book with a musical instrument in the title or author's name

Erika Kohuts life is dominated by her mother. Her father is away, went to an psychatric hospital, and never returned. Her mother wants Erika to be a great piano player, but she din't reach the top, and now she gives piano lessons at the music academy. She might become a professor soon.
All outside her piano carreer is smothered by her mother. She tries to escape by buying clothes she never will wear, cutting herself, and going to peep-shows.
Her sexual desires have been perverted. When she gets involved with one of her pupils, Walter Klemmer, it spirals down soon, and for the first time in her life she is able to shut her mother out.

A hefty read, way to familiar, and so well written! I didn't experience exactly the same, but went on a silmilar road to self-destruction. Gladly I got a life after.

>133 msf59: Thank you, Mark, we are just back from visiting my father.

No dumb question, the only dumb question is the one you didn't (dare to) ask!
We don't exchange books anymore, we did do so in the past. These days our shelves are overly filled, so new books mean that other books have to go.
However we did preorder two books that will be published next year. Finally a new translation of Vasili Grossman's Stalingrad will come next year, the first edition was published in 1946 and is hard to find. The other book is The Complete Poems of Paul Celan in a bilingual edition. There is still a little place on the shelves of the poetry section, so the Celan will be no problem. For the Grossman we will have to make room, not sure yet what we will give up for it.

Like you Anita, I love the treasure hunts and try to complete them as soon as I can. This was a fun one! I did struggle with number 11, but I finally got it, with the help of the hints of others. I'm not sure about you, but we have been having a relatively mild winter so far. Here in the Vancouver area, we have similar climate conditions as you do. Lots of rain and mild temps. But this year we have had less rain and yesterday I think it was 11 C during the day. This time of the year , we might expect temperatures to be lower , maybe just about 0 C for few days, but so far, so good.

>148 vancouverdeb: It was indeed a fun hunt, Deborah. I can't remember needing so few hints in any hunt before.
We have sililair climate here, and winter has been mild and very wet so far. The whole year has been the warmest and wettest since 1901!
Strangely we have been lucky on Frank's working nights, he walks to work on the first evening, and back the next morning, and he could walk dry every time. The forecast for this evening, and tomorrow morning, looks good again.
