It's a book about a little boy going through an surgical operation and his nurse, Bami, tells him to find his good place in his dreams and to let a finder (usually an animal) to guide him and keep him safe. Jim learns the power of his dreams and makes it through the operation safely and can finally go home with his family, just in time for Christmas. It is a fantasy book because unrealistic things happen in this book. The heavy sick Jim recovers because he has found his finder in the dream, a lion. The book give us the idea that people can escape death if they have found their animal finder. It is a good book for middle school because the book is a little bit long. Review: A young boy Jim who is afraid of the operation that can help him get well, learns to overcome his fear with the help of a caring nurse, by believing there is a great lion who always appears to look for him when he lost.. Critique: This is a contemporary realistic fiction, because the story is about something that could actually happen “in the now”. The illustrations were done in pencil and pastel. Comments on use: Children will learn what the courage is. Telling Children sometimes they could believe in their own faith. Appropriateness age: Intermediate Middle school This story about a young boy facing a life-threatening illness was originally published in 2001 as a picture book illustrated by Ian Andrews which I have not seen. This book is reimagined in a graphic novel format with the same text but new illustrations by Alexis Deacon. Deacon's bold, dramatic, emotionally intense wordless dream (or nightmarish) sequences effectively captures Jim's adversity and courage confronting it. Inventive and sophisticated storytelling.
