The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists

Not since Moby-Dick...No, not since Treasure Island...Actually, not since Jonah and the Whale has there been a sea saga to rival The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, featuring the greatest sea-faring hero of all time, the immortal Pirate Captain, who, although he lives for months at a time at sea, somehow manages to keep his beard silky and in good condition.

Worried that his pirates are growing bored with a life of winking at pretty native ladies and trying to stick enough jellyfish together to make a bouncy castle, the Pirate Captain decides it's high time to spearhead an adventure.

While searching for some major pirate booty, he mistakenly attacks the young Charles Darwin's Beagle and then leads his ragtag crew from the exotic Galapagos Islands to the fog-filled streets of Victorian London. There they encounter grisly murder, vanishing ladies, radioactive elephants, and the Holy Ghost himself. And that's not even the half of it.

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Ahab

Fresh from their mishaps with Charles Darwin and the evil Bishop of Oxford, the Pirates set sail in a bouncy new vessel--purchased on credit. In order to repay his debts, The Pirate Captain is determined to capture the enigmatic White Whale, hunted by the notoriously moody Ahab, who has promised a reward.

Chaos ensues, featuring the lascivious Cutlass Liz, the world's most dangerous mosquito, an excerpt from the Pirate Captain's novel in progress (a bodice ripper, of course), whale ventriloquism, practical lessons in whale painting, a shanty-singing contest in a Las Vegas casino, and a dramatic climax in which the Pirate Captain's Prize Ham saves the day!

Move over, Herman Melville.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

The Pirates! In and Adventure with Scientists & The Pirates! In an Adventure with Ahab is a collection of two of Gideon Defoe's very funny stories starring the Pirate Captain and his band of merry pirates. This series was the basis for the Aardman film, Pirates! Band of Misfits. I actually like Defoe's book series better than the film. If you like British humor or satire, history and literature you'll like this series.

A most unusual band of pirates help Charles Darwin introduce his manpanzee, Mister Bobo, to London high society and catch (or not) Moby Dick for Captain Ahab in this “double feature” book. These are very, very silly tales of pirates who are mainly concerned with ham (and the various ways in which it can be prepared), but if you’re in the mood for something that Monty Python or Black Adder could act out, its surreal humor should bring a few giggles to even the hardest of hearts. I do have to give it a minus, because it gets a little "samey" after a while - reading a 2-in-1 wasn't the best of ideas. I did realize that I enjoyed the parts I read out loud the most, so I would absolutely recommend an audio version. ( )

4/26/12 - Roughly seven chapters into this book at the moment and am finding it quite funny and clever, though wishing it were a bit "more" at times. The truly gut-bustingly funny moments seem to be fewer and further between than anticipated (i.e. Gary the Parrot's line about "Pieces of Ape" after the Pirates have massacred Darwin's monkey collection), but there is a gentle humor which is consistent throughout and which is very pleasant.

I like the tension the author is setting up between the Pirate Captain and Darwin - especially in the way that Darwin often points out "easy" things that the PC should have known and yet missed, followed by the PC giving Darwin a steely stare that causes him to sulk. It seems like Defoe is setting up a sort of sibling-like rivalry between them where they pester and annoy one another all the time, yet band together and get the job done in the end.

The animated film based on the book comes out in a couple of days and I'm hoping I will have all, or at least most, of the book done before I go to see the film.

Silly, clever and funny. I particularly enjoyed the dastardly Bishop subjecting the pirate with a scarf and Jennifer to psychometric tests to determine which one wasn't really female, but there are many laugh-out-loud/forehead-slapping funny bits. ( )
