I loved it. I read it while in a plane and other passengers ( German btw) were puzzled and at times annoyed because i could not help laughing out loud. I am not an english native speaker but i could feel the pain of Mr. Twain. A fun read and totally recommended for those learning, or struggling, with the German language. Thanks Mario for the gift. ( )

Although I definitely agreed with a lot of the difficulties that the author had with German, I found his assumption that English is a nearly perfect language that other languages should compare themselves with more than a bit irritating. His insistence on using English words in his German speech was nearly enough to make me put down the book for good, as it is something I get more than enough of when I talk to native English speakers. ( )

Mark Twain beschreibt in diesem Aufsatz, wie es ihm als Deutsch-Lerner erging. Die hier vorliegende Ausgabe ist in beiden Sprachen, auf der einen Seite englisch und auf der anderen Seite die deutsche Übersetzung. Ich würde auf jeden Fall immer das Englische lesen, denn viele Anspielungen und Wortwitze ergeben sich nur im englischen. Das Buch ist wirklich witzig. Natürlich weiß man, wie schwer die deutsche Sprache ist. Ich habe selbst Germanistik studiert, daher ist mir das schon klar Und trotzdem ist es ausgesprochen erhellend, wenn man liest, wie schwierig es für Twain als Amerikaner ist deutsch zu lernen. Welche Bereiche schwer sind, identifiziert er sofort, z.B. Komposita und Präpositionen. Und diese Probleme waren vor 100 Jahren nicht sehr viel anders als heute. Das Buch ist unterhaltsam und schnell gelesen. Klare Empfehlung! ( )
