Daniel Goleman and Peter Senge provide educators with a rationale for incorporating three core skill sets in the classroom--understanding self, other, and the larger systems within which we operate--and show why these competencies are needed to help students navigate a fast-paced world of increasing distraction and growing interconnectedness. The book also offers examples of model educational programs that include these competencies in their curriculum, and shares best practices for introducing them in schools. When I saw "systems level thinking" I was hesitant to read about another method to bring into the classroom. However, the book is interesting and easy to read. These are skills that students seem to be lacking these days and understanding oneself and relationships with others will drive student behavior, which impacts academic success. This seems like such a basic concept that has gotten buried underneath technology and standardized assessments. Recommended for any educators. ( )
