"How do mothers and fathers--whether they are apple trees, sheep, or humans--pass down traits to their children? This question fascinated Gregor Mendel throughout his life. Regarded as the world's first geneticist, Mendel overcame poverty and obscurity to discover one of the fundamental aspects of genetic science: animals, plants, and people all inherit and pass down traits through the same process, following the same rules. Living the slow-paced, contemplative life of a friar, Gregor Mendel was able to conceive and put into practice his great experiment: growing multiple generations of peas. From observing yellow peas, green peas, smooth peas, and wrinkled peas, Mendel crafted his theory of heredity--years before scientists had any notion of genes. Children will be inspired by Gregor's neverending search for knowledge, and his famous experiments are easy to understand as an introduction to genetics."--Publisher's website. Presents the life of the geneticist, discussing the poverty of his childhood, his struggle to get an education, his life as a monk, his discovery of the laws of genetics, and the rediscovery of his work thirty-five years after its publication.… (més)

A detailed biography of the first geneticist, Gregor Mendel, who spent many years painstakingly growing and observing pea plants to discern how traits were passed from parent to child. He presented his findings in 1865 in Brno (in what is now the Czech Republic), but his work was overlooked - despite the fact that Charles Darwin was working on his theory of evolution at the same time. Mendel's work was rediscovered and heralded after his death.

Beautifully rendered illustrations show scenes and people as well as diagrams of green and yellow peas.

Back matter includes a select bibliography and an author's note. ( )

An inspiring story of a friar who laid down foundations of genetics. He was born in a small village in Czech republic, his dad was a farmer. The little boy was very curious and loved learning. He went to an expensive school, without enough money to buy food. When he became a friar, he stated his experiments with different types of pees. It took him years tp hand-pollinate and separate pees with different colors and texture. He published his discoveries in papers that were noticed more than century after his death... What a revolutionary! He employed raw curiosity, logic and creativity at the time when modern labs did not exist yet. A great book for young readers! ( )

An excellent introduction to genetics through this simple book that explains Mendel's work to understand family resemblence and similarity. ( )

This book would be so good to read to students as you are introducing the idea of traits being passed down from parents to their children. It explains a lot of Mendel's life and how he got to developing his theories.
